Radev blamed the failure on the drone\u2019s small size and low altitude, along with years of delays in purchasing modern three-dimensional radar systems. The statement is more honest than it was probably meant to sound. Defense almost always prepares for the last war, armed against fighter jets and blind to the toy carrying a warhead underneath them. That is the calculation behind weapons like these. A drone costs little, while the radar systems needed to stop it cost billions, and anyone who can occupy an alliance\u2019s defenses with a few thousand dollars has already won before hitting anything. The most expensive shield is worth little if the enemy simply flies underneath it. And when the technology fails, so does a promise, because an alliance lives by its pledge that it knows its own airspace and can close it when it matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The impact was hardly a coincidence. Until the end of July, MiG-29s and surface-to-air missile systems protected Bulgarian airspace. Starting at 9 a.m. on July 31, the military stepped up surveillance in this area after the Romanian Air Force shot down three Shahed-type drones, the kind used by the Russian military against Ukraine. Cougar helicopters and Su-25 fighter jets were added, along with additional radar stations. All of that, and a small aircraft still got through on August 8. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Russian drones have violated Romanian airspace 33 times, according to authorities in Bucharest. After the incidents in July, Bucharest first summoned the Russian ambassador and then expelled a diplomat. Flights like these are also a test. They probe how far radar can see and how quickly an alliance wakes up, and every undetected crossing is an answer the attacker takes note of. Tie up defenses along one stretch of border and another is left exposed, and that is exactly the gap being tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the location may explain the target. The gas facility near Kardam connects the Bulgarian and Romanian networks and is part of the Vertical Gas Corridor, which is intended to carry natural gas from Greece through Bulgaria and Romania to Moldova and Ukraine, in both directions. The route is currently being expanded to replace Russian gas with other supplies. Last year, the United States signed a long-term agreement to export liquefied natural gas to Greece in an effort to reduce the influence of Russian oil and gas in southeastern Europe. The expansion, Radev said in June alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was on schedule. Work in southern Bulgaria had been completed, while construction in the north was underway. Bulgaria is increasing the capacity of its connection there by 2 billion cubic meters, to 5 billion, and wants a role in the northern Greek port of Kavala, envisioned as part of a rail route connecting Greek ports with Bulgarian ports on the Black Sea and the Danube while bypassing the Bosporus. For Moldova and Ukraine, this pipeline is more than a trade route. It is a piece of independence from the country waging war against both of them. Hit it, and you are not just hitting a pipe, you are hitting a region\u2019s attempt to break free from dependence. A drone falls out of the sky right there, and coincidence would have to be awfully busy to explain that away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is no small amount of irony in who is watching over all of this. Rumen Radev, who stepped down as president in January and became prime minister in May, is regarded by many observers as Russia-friendly and Euroskeptic. Now he, of all people, is defending the skies against possibly Russian drones and a pipeline meant to replace Russian gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bulgaria is now moving drone detection and countermeasure systems to the Romanian border, where the Turkish border had previously been the priority, and plans to strengthen security around strategic facilities, with the State Agency for National Security instructing all relevant authorities to do so. Early next week, the case is expected to go before NATO\u2019s North Atlantic Council, where Poland plans to report on ballistic missiles and debris found on its territory and Romania on the drones it shot down. Bulgaria will bring the explosion in the sunflower field, once again, just 100 meters from the border. It is the familiar order in which alliances operate, first the incident, then the meeting. What remains unanswered is how a defense alliance plans to protect skies when it cannot even detect their smallest intruders. The drone has already delivered what was asked of it. It showed that 100 meters is enough to leave the West\u2019s most expensive eyes blind for a morning, and that a sunflower field in August is closer to the front than the map would have you believe.
