On Friday, the U.S. Department of Justice asked the court to dismiss the criminal case against former Olympian David Hearn. The 67 year old had been accused of deliberately damaging the Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Federal prosecutors now say newly uncovered evidence paints a completely different picture. According to the filing, the damage resulted from a flawed installation by the contractor and the rush to finish the project before the America 250 celebrations surrounding Independence Day 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro wrote that under those circumstances it is impossible to prove vandalism or any criminal offense beyond a reasonable doubt. Hearn had been detained for hours on June 19 by National Guard troops and U.S. Park Police after stopping at the Reflecting Pool during a bike ride. He acknowledged briefly touching part of the peeling liner but immediately let go after being told to do so by a park employee. Even so, prosecutors charged him with felony property destruction, a charge carrying up to 10 years in prison. Hearn's attorneys say the case should never have been brought and accuse the administration of turning an innocent man into a political scapegoat. Anyone applying for a new U.S. passport will soon be able to choose a special edition dedicated to Donald Trump. The State Department announced that it is rolling out the so called Patriot Passport nationwide. Until now, the limited edition had only been available in Washington, D.C., but another 250,000 copies will now be released. Applicants will initially be able to obtain one during special events at selected passport offices, with more locations being added throughout August. One of the interior pages features a large portrait of the president with his signature embossed in gold above it. Trump is now the first living president ever to be featured inside a U.S. passport. The design of the passport itself has also been changed. Instead of the traditional layout, \"United States of America\" now appears across the top in large gold lettering, with \"Passport\" below it. The back cover includes a gold American flag marked with the number 250 to commemorate the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary. The State Department says the expansion is in response to overwhelming public demand. The passport is now part of a growing list of government sponsored tributes to Trump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just days ago, the U.S. Mint began producing a commemorative America 250 coin featuring Trump's face. At the same time, efforts are underway to place his signature on all newly printed U.S. paper currency, something that would also be unprecedented for a sitting president. Additional plans include a massive new White House ballroom, a monumental arch at one of Washington's main entrances, and the temporary renaming of public buildings after Trump. A federal court has already stepped in once, ordering the removal of Trump's name from the Kennedy Center. While millions of Americans are dealing with rising prices, soaring debt, and ongoing political crises, the administration continues to spend time and energy creating new monuments to its own president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their study examined 55 historically documented food shortages between the years 1 and 650 AD and compared them with detailed climate reconstructions from the Roman Empire's main grain producing regions. Those regions included Rome itself, Sicily, Sardinia, the Roman province of Africa, and the Nile basin, whose annual floods supplied a large share of the empire's grain. The researchers also looked not only at individual weather events but at prolonged periods of drought and cold lasting several years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results were surprisingly clear. During the height of the Roman Empire, there was almost no consistent connection between weather conditions and food shortages. Grain reached the city from several distant regions with completely different climates. If Sicily suffered a poor harvest, shipments from North Africa or Egypt could make up the difference. Government grain reserves, taxes paid in grain, and a highly organized distribution network helped absorb supply shocks. That only changed after the Vandals conquered North Africa in the fifth century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rome lost a major part of its supply network and became increasingly dependent on Italy, Sicily, and Sardinia. Only then did colder years begin to show a clear connection with food shortages. According to the researchers, climate itself was not the primary cause. It simply magnified the weaknesses of an already damaged supply system. Hunger became far more likely when trade routes collapsed, political conflicts disrupted shipments, or state institutions could no longer keep the system running. The Orangemen are marching through the streets of Belfast once again. Drums, flutes, Union Jacks, and thousands of spectators define the annual Twelfth of July celebrations. Officially, they commemorate the victory of the Protestant King William III over the Catholic King James II in 1690. To some, it is a cherished tradition. To others, it has long been seen as a display of dominance. This summer, however, the anger of many participants was no longer directed at Catholics. The new target is immigration. In loyalist neighborhoods such as Sandy Row and Donegall Pass, residents say their community is shrinking, their culture is disappearing, and their neighborhoods are changing faster than they are willing to accept. Northern Ireland remains the least ethnically diverse part of the United Kingdom, with only 3.4 percent of its population coming from minority ethnic backgrounds. Even so, immigration has risen noticeably in recent years, especially in Belfast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many loyalists, that alone is enough to create a sense of threat. After a stabbing in June, in which an asylum seeker was later charged with attempted murder, far right groups spread calls for demonstrations within hours. On June 8, 44 year old Stephen Ogilvie was seriously injured in a knife attack in Belfast. He suffered deep cuts to his face, neck, and back and later lost his left eye. One day later, prosecutors charged 30 year old asylum seeker Hadi Alodid with attempted murder. His nationality was initially reported as Somali, later corrected by police to Sudanese, while investigators are now also examining whether he may actually be from Chad. Shortly afterward, cars, homes, and businesses were set on fire. Families with children had to be evacuated from their homes. A halal supermarket was attacked and burned twice. Graffiti reading \"Stop the Boats\" appeared across metal shutters. Police later said members of loyalist paramilitary groups were present during the riots and had in some cases helped direct the violence. Although these organizations officially disbanded after the Troubles, many have since evolved into organized crime networks. Researchers have observed for years that fewer and fewer people identify as loyalists or unionists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That growing sense of political and social decline has made many people more vulnerable to right wing groups that portray immigrants as the source of every problem. Nearly three decades after the Good Friday Agreement, one uncomfortable reality has become impossible to ignore. The conflict between Protestants and Catholics has not disappeared. As recently as Friday morning, FIFA insisted that nobody was selling football. The criticism was acknowledged, officials said, but the plan would move forward. Just a few hours later, the entire proposal was dead. Gianni Infantino pulled the plug on his multibillion dollar project and announced Friday evening that it had created too much division within world football. It would not move forward. For the FIFA president, it is the biggest political defeat since taking office in 2016. The proposal called for creating a new company called FIFA Forward Enterprises. The commercial rights to the men's and women's World Cups, along with the Club World Cup, would have been transferred into the new entity. FIFA then planned to sell a 21 percent stake to private investors. The deal was expected to generate an immediate 4.2 billion dollars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lead investor was Thrive, the investment firm founded by American billionaire Joshua Kushner, the younger brother of Jared Kushner. Many football officials saw that structure as an attempt to buy support. Then the project began to fall apart. UEFA announced that all 55 of its member associations would boycott every FIFA competition unless the proposal was withdrawn. Soon afterward, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation joined the opposition. Together, those three confederations represent 137 of FIFA's 211 member associations. His longtime adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned and publicly called the proposal a bad deal for football. Until just a few days ago, his reelection in March 2027 was widely considered inevitable. Now even longtime allies are openly talking about a dramatic loss of confidence. Chinese military researchers have used responses generated by AI models from the American companies OpenAI and Anthropic to develop their own systems for intelligence gathering, target recognition, cyber warfare, and drone operations, according to an analysis of numerous scientific papers and patents. The goal was not to recreate the American models in full. Instead, researchers took the answers produced by those systems and used them to train smaller, specialized models that could later run on Chinese hardware inside isolated military networks. The process is known as model distillation and is widely used throughout the AI industry. In a military setting, however, it takes on an entirely different meaning. One unit of China's People's Liberation Army reportedly used GPT-3.5 to generate summaries of sensitive software code. Those summaries were then used to train a Chinese model capable of operating entirely inside secure military systems without exposing classified data to foreign providers. Researchers at China's National University of Defense Technology applied the same method to shrink image recognition systems so they could run directly aboard drones. The goal was to enable real time navigation, target identification, and video analysis even after losing communication with command centers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

China's Academy of Military Sciences has already used similar models in simulations involving drones, warships, and unmanned submarines operating together. Researchers also relied on Anthropic's Claude 3 Haiku to generate synthetic data for systems designed to monitor social media and automatically moderate online content. Anthropic said it does not provide commercial access to its services inside China and actively works to detect misuse. OpenAI did not comment. The dispute has now grown far beyond individual software models. Washington accuses Chinese organizations of using American AI capabilities for military purposes while bypassing technology restrictions and intellectual property protections. Beijing rejects those accusations. One point, however, is no longer in dispute. Model distillation cannot replace the enormous computing power required to build a cutting edge AI system from scratch. What it can do is transfer selected capabilities from advanced Western models into far cheaper and tightly controlled military systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
