During an event at the White House, the president claimed the nation's highways had been \"terrorized\" by \"unqualified illegal aliens\" driving heavy trucks. He said they should now be replaced by \"highly qualified AMERICAN VETERANS.\" The centerpiece of the new \"Freedom Haulers Initiative\" is the automatic recognition of military driving experience. Anyone who drove heavy trucks in the military would be able to receive a civilian Commercial Driver's License without additional hurdles. The Union of European Football Associations - UEFA - and all 55 of its member associations have announced they will boycott every FIFA competition if Infantino moves forward with his plan to sell ownership stakes in World Cups and other FIFA tournaments to private investors. Shortly afterward, CONCACAF, representing 41 member nations across North and Central America, also came out against the proposal. Open criticism is now coming from Asia as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president of the Asian Football Confederation, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, warned that FIFA is putting the foundations of international soccer at risk by acting on its own while ignoring the interests of the continental confederations. The controversy centers on Infantino's plan to move all of FIFA's commercial business into a new company valued at roughly $20 billion. Twenty percent of that company would then be sold to private investors. The leading financial backer is reported to be a New York investment firm owned by Joshua Kushner, the brother of Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son in law. To win support, Infantino promised each of FIFA's 211 member associations that their annual base funding would double from $10 million to $20 million and pledged significantly higher overall payouts through 2038. But that offer is exactly what triggered the backlash. UEFA says the World Cup belongs to soccer and must never become an investment vehicle for international financial firms. CONCACAF has criticized the lack of transparency, the extremely short timeline, and the fact that FIFA's governing bodies were never allowed to debate or vote on the proposal. It had been created using an artificial intelligence tool built with OpenAI software, and the company is now reviewing the incident. The State Department accepted full responsibility, saying an employee had made last minute changes to the presentation just before it began. You can almost picture the scene. Someone types a prompt into a program, the program delivers an answer, and nobody bothers to check it because the machine is supposedly smarter than the person feeding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AIDS researcher Emily Bass was the first to publish photos of the slide, and they quickly spread across social media. One post alone drew around 40,000 views. An expert from the Atlantic Council summed it up by saying that whoever created and approved the slide neither knew where Africa's countries are nor cared enough to verify it. The presentation itself was delivered by Jeff Graham, who oversees PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the largest program ever launched by a single nation to fight a single disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is where the humor ends. While the political rhetoric has become increasingly aggressive, Russia's importance to one of the most critical sectors of America's energy supply has continued to grow. The United States passed legislation in 2024 that formally banned imports of Russian uranium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, Congress granted the Department of Energy broad exemptions. As long as sufficient alternative suppliers are not available or national interests are involved, American nuclear operators are still allowed to purchase reactor fuel from Russia. Those exemptions do not expire until early 2028. That was supposed to be the deadline for a complete phase out of Russian enriched uranium. Today, even industry experts consider that goal highly unrealistic. The numbers explain why. Last year, 77 percent of all uranium enrichment services purchased by American nuclear power plants came from foreign suppliers. Domestic capacity is nowhere near large enough to replace those imports in the short term. At the same time, the Trump administration is pushing for a major expansion of nuclear energy, which already generates about one fifth of America's electricity. That means demand for reactor fuel will continue to increase while new tariffs and trade disputes make it even harder to build alternative supply chains. Ironically, the administration that has made economic independence one of its defining political themes is running into a problem that cannot simply be solved by executive order. Russia is the clear beneficiary. According to calculations by the environmental organization Bellona, exports of enriched uranium to the United States generated more than $1 billion for Moscow in 2025 alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the Biden administration, those revenues were about $624 million. Europe also remains heavily dependent on Russian uranium. Russia is still the European Union's largest supplier. Its market share fell from 38 percent to 24 percent in 2024, but replacement sources remain limited across much of Europe. Just last week, Germany's federal government and the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment approved the expansion of the fuel assembly plant in Lingen under a license from TVEL, a subsidiary of Russia's state nuclear company Rosatom. The explanation from German officials was unusually direct. Because the European Union has still not imposed sanctions on Rosatom, they said there was no legal basis for blocking the cooperation. Behind the political declarations about standing tough against Moscow, the reality has changed very little.
