For Jeffrey Epstein, it was where the real story began. In 2008, he pleaded guilty in a Florida court to procuring a minor for prostitution. He was required to register as a sex offender and was officially a man under court supervision. Yet according to an investigation that examined thousands of Justice Department records, emails, Skype messages, and flight bookings, it was in the years that followed that his operation reached its full scale. Between 2009 and 2019, his staff allegedly booked more than 3,700 commercial flights. Most of those trips were not made on the infamous private jet. They happened on ordinary commercial airlines, where a crime disappears because it looks exactly like every other reservation, one ticket among millions.

Read also our article: The Hidden Pact - Why You Can Only Understand the Jeffrey Epstein Case If You Reconstruct the First 2007 Proceeding - and the Fake Madness of 2026

Those flight routes draw a map of recruitment. They stretched from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic states, and Brazil to Paris, New York, and Little St. James in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the very places where investigators say many of the assaults took place. Nearly half of the bookings contain no passenger names because the Justice Department redacted the identities of alleged victims. What remains is movement without faces, a system whose operation can be followed almost step by step while the people inside it disappear from view. The investigation is still ongoing. It will likely take months before most of the names involved can be uncovered.

Women were recruited with one of the oldest promises in the business, a modeling career. In the released messages, recruiters talked about castings, photographers, and an art collector the women should meet. They openly discussed buying modeling agencies, magazines, and beauty pageants to secure a permanent pipeline of young women. Human trafficking experts consulted during the investigation concluded that the documented methods of recruitment and transportation match the characteristics of an organized international trafficking operation. More than 100 women have accused Epstein of sexual abuse, and several said they were flown to his properties in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean through different channels. The word authorities tried to minimize in 2008 now stands in plain sight.

But how do you move hundreds of women across international borders for more than a decade without raising alarms at embassies, consulates, or immigration checkpoints? The answer carries one of the most recognizable names in luxury finance. Epstein’s office relied on American Express Centurion Services, the invitation only Black Card program whose representatives act as travel agency, concierge, and problem solver for their wealthiest clients. What serves as a luxury convenience for most customers allegedly became part of the infrastructure of a criminal enterprise. The account manager did not just arrange flights. She also booked trips that were never meant to happen, solely so women could present travel itineraries when applying for visas.

That is where money reveals its true nature. On the same account statements that listed locksmiths, plumbing supplies, chocolates, movie tickets, and expensive Manhattan restaurants appeared flights for young women traveling from Eastern Europe. The card treated both the same. Once something has a price, it becomes another transaction. One assistant even requested complete travel itineraries for the women, complete with price tags. That single phrase captures the coldness of a system that handled human beings as cargo and accounted for them the same way.

The Centurion account manager, a Russian born executive based near Atlanta who reportedly once worked for a visa agency, appeared to understand exactly what was happening. In December 2012, referring to a booking for a woman from Eastern Europe, she asked whether the reservation was only for visa purposes. She admitted that it technically violated American Express policy but said she could still hold the reservation until later that evening. She ignored reporters' questions, and the company declined to say whether she is still employed there. After the visa interview, the reservation was canceled. "You did a great job," the assistant replied. In January 2016, another fake itinerary was arranged from Rome to London for a woman who never intended to take the flight but needed proof of travel. In March 2018, the manager asked whether she could cancel flights that had been booked only to obtain a Canadian visa. More than a dozen colleagues helped coordinate flights connecting Moscow, Miami, Minsk, New York, St. Petersburg, and Warsaw. At one point, the assistant specifically noted that one traveler was over the age of 25. By then, it had become routine.

What should have raised alarms did not. These kinds of booking patterns and fabricated travel itineraries are exactly the sort of red flags a Centurion representative is supposed to report. A former American Express employee explained why that apparently never happened. Black Card representatives are trained to make things happen for their clients, not to question them. According to him, the obligation to report suspicious activity often took a back seat to keeping high value customers satisfied. American Express said it closed Epstein's accounts after he was indicted, condemned human trafficking, and insisted it takes its legal reporting obligations seriously.

Epstein had been an American Express customer since 1977, and a highly profitable one. At times, he reportedly spent more than $1 million a year through the company. He held at least one Centurion Card as early as 2004. By 2012, he reportedly had three. By 2017, as many as nine were active. One card was issued in the name of the daughter of billionaire friends. Another belonged to his partner Karyna Shuliak and carried a monthly spending limit of $60,000. That kind of financial privilege bought him something most convicted sex offenders never receive, a seamless return to elite society where a criminal conviction became nothing more than a footnote.

Above everything else hung an obsession with secrecy. In 2017, after a flight confirmation was accidentally sent to multiple recipients, longtime assistant Lesley Groff demanded that every email address except her own be removed from the account. Epstein, she wrote, was furious. He was extremely private and wanted confirmations sent only to her. She said she was terrified that all the upcoming tickets from Russia to Paris might once again end up with someone on the distribution list. That, she wrote, would be "a gigantic problem." The Centurion manager responded by offering 60,000 reward points to smooth things over, adding that American Express valued Mr. Epstein's business and appreciated the assistant's hard work.

What makes the correspondence even harder to read is how warm it sounds. The two women chatted about coffee, dental surgery, dance competitions, and vacations. On International Women's Day in 2017, the Centurion manager sent her congratulations and even taught Groff a Russian greeting she could use with "her Russian girls." At one point Groff asked whether their office changed flights more often than other customers. "Yes," came the reply, "but you're the best, the most understanding and the most patient. I love you." Human trafficking was wrapped in the language of friendship, polite conversation, and customer service.

The transportation continued almost until the very end. Between March and June 2019, more than $2.5 million flowed through the account, much of it charged to a card named after Epstein's private island. During those final weeks, women traveled from Kyiv, Moscow, Warsaw, and London to Paris while Epstein met with diplomats, scientists, and business executives there. On July 6, 2019, he returned to the United States and was arrested by the FBI. Yet five days after his arrest, American Express Travel still sent his partner an itinerary for a business class trip from New York to Warsaw and then on to Minsk. The message ended with a simple wish: Have a pleasant trip.

One question hangs over the entire decade. While Jeffrey Epstein was officially listed by the government as a convicted sex offender, thousands of international trips were allegedly organized during the very same years, and no one stepped in. This investigation cannot reconstruct the fate of every woman because too many names remain redacted, although several travel routes could be linked to known victims. One year ago, the family of Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's accusers, held a memorial on the anniversary of her death. The memorials remain. The Black Card settled its bill a long time ago.

To be continued ...

Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
