On Tuesday, Donald Trump announced that he intends to take the war with Iran back to where it began, with a bunker buster strike against a nuclear facility. Standing alongside Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, he said the United States would probably hit that area very soon and that Iran could do absolutely nothing to stop it. The mountain he was referring to is known among Western intelligence agencies as Pickaxe Mountain. The most remarkable thing about it is that it is probably empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignwide\"><video height=\"360\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 640 \/ 360;\" width=\"640\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaizen-blog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/montainicknuc.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Question: Do you believe Iran has moved nuclear centrifuges into Pickaxe Mountain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TRUMP: All we do is read the fake news. Maybe this one they have right. But it's okay. It doesn't mean anything unless they have the material. We'll be hitting that area pretty soon and very heavily.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No expert believes the mountain contains the kind of operating facilities that enrich uranium and turn it into bomb fuel like the three major nuclear sites Trump ordered bombed in June 2025. International inspectors consider it unlikely that any significant amount of enriched uranium is stored there. At best, analysts believe the tunnels contain centrifuge components or perhaps complete machines, a difficult target even for the largest bunker buster bombs in the American arsenal. It is, in other words, a deeply buried storage site, not the heart of Iran's nuclear program. But for a president standing at a turning point in his war, it hardly matters whether the mountain is empty or not. This is not about uranium. It is about sending a message that his willingness to escalate has no limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That message, however, hides something else - uncertainty. It became impossible to ignore later that same afternoon during a Senate hearing. The war, which has been underway since February 28, has failed to produce the unconditional surrender Trump once demanded. The same strategy of blockading the Persian Gulf while striking bridges, power plants, and coastal positions had already failed during the first thirty eight days of the conflict, and no one in the administration has explained why repeating it should suddenly produce a different outcome. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth dodged questions from Democratic senators and answered them with threats instead. If Iran attacks commercial shipping, he warned, the United States would hit back ten times harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point it is worth remembering an old observation about the nature of threats. A truly strong person does not threaten. They act. Threats are the language of someone trying to create the appearance of power without possessing enough of it, replacing action with words. The louder someone announces what they are going to do to their enemy, the more clearly they admit that action alone is no longer enough. Trump's mountain has become the perfect symbol of that weakness. Bombing an empty storage site serves only to preserve the illusion of strength that has already begun to crumble on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignwide\"><video height=\"360\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 640 \/ 360;\" width=\"640\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaizen-blog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/heggarwarcon.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PETERS: \"WIN THE WAR! The men and women need leadership! WHEN WILL YOU SHOW LEADERSHIP?!\" HEGSETH: \"Why don't YOU show some leadership and stand up to your fellow Democrats who won't FUND the troops! Who stand and play partisan politics while YOU don't give us the money!\" Peters: \"You, sir, are the failure\u2026When will you show leadership?\" Hegseth: \"You have Trump Derangement Syndrome and can't actually commit to anything meaningful, so I put this on you.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The numbers Hegseth presented tell their own story. He put the cost of the war so far at $37.5 billion, yet he is now asking for nearly twice that amount to continue it. At the same time, he used the expanding conflict to justify increasing the defense budget to $1.5 trillion, a jump of more than fifty percent in a single year. He offered no broader explanation for such a dramatic increase. Instead, he blamed the Biden administration, saying he had no idea what his predecessor, Lloyd Austin, had been doing for four years and calling the level of neglect shocking. It was an unusual attack by one defense secretary against another, and a particularly striking one. Austin left office as a four star general and former commander of the combat command responsible for American military operations across the Middle East. Hegseth left the military as a Reserve major. Senator Jack Reed dismissed the explanations as \"a very obvious excuse\" for what he said appeared to be gross negligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just how fragile the administration's own claims of success have become was exposed by another exchange. Senator Patty Murray reminded Hegseth that only months ago he had declared much of Iran's missile arsenal had essentially been destroyed. She wanted to know how that squared with the continuing attacks on Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and even Qatar, a country serving as a mediator between the two sides. Hegseth avoided the question. He called Iran a terrorist state and insisted the country was in the weakest position it had ever been in. At the same time, he admitted Iran unquestionably still retained military capabilities. An arsenal that has supposedly been destroyed but continues firing is either not destroyed at all, or someone else is doing the shooting. Either answer would tell us something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump himself searched for justification in history and ended up drifting to its edges. On social media, he urged Americans to be patient, pointing out that the war in Afghanistan lasted twenty years and cost two thousand American lives, that Iraq lasted nine years and claimed forty six hundred, and that Vietnam stretched on for more than nineteen years with fifty eight thousand two hundred twenty American dead. Against those wars he placed one of his own, Venezuela - one day, zero American casualties - even though the capture of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro could hardly be described as a war. It is the bookkeeping of a man who sorts death into columns and hopes his own column stays empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just how far removed from reality that man has become was revealed in an exchange with a reporter that cuts deeper than any analysis. The journalist pointed out that there were no signs Iran was prepared to stop fighting and asked what the plan actually was. Trump answered with a question of his own. How do you know there are no signs? Do you know something I don't? The reporter did not back down. Iran, he said, continues attacking America's allies and continues killing Americans. Trump remained unfazed. They desperately want to meet with us to end the war, he replied. You just don't know that because you watch your fake news network. You don't know anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignwide\"><video height=\"360\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 640 \/ 360;\" width=\"640\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaizen-blog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/trumpcradesmnot.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Question: \"There are no signs that Iran is ready to stop fighting. So what's the plan?\"<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TRUMP: \"How do you know there are no signs? Do you know something I don't?\"<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Question: \"They continue to attack our allies and kill Americas\"<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TRUMP: \"They want to meet desperately to try to end it. You don't get that when you listen to your fake station. You don't know anything.\"<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read that exchange alongside the reality of the very same week - the tenth night of the war, American troops killed, Gulf states under attack. A reporter confronts the president with the plain facts of the war, and the president denies them, points to a meeting that no one has confirmed, and falls back on insulting a television network instead. That is the moment when the threat no longer hides weakness alone. It reveals a complete loss of touch with reality. Half the world now depends on the decisions of a man who seems more concerned with arguing with a reporter than explaining how the war he started is supposed to end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should Trump follow through on his threat, it would mark the first strike against a major Iranian nuclear facility since February 28. Until now, those sites have largely been left untouched, perhaps because destroying them further would only make it harder to recover Iran's enriched uranium later, if the United States is truly serious about doing so. In the end, what would remain is an attack on a mountain that may contain very little, ordered by a president for whom threats have become the last remaining weapon. The mountain is called Pickaxe.
