A new 50 percent tariff will be imposed on most Canadian imports. The affected products include automobiles, alcohol, and dairy goods. The White House says the move is justified because Canada has treated American manufacturers unfairly for years and has discriminated against them through its own trade policies. Trump says that is reason enough for another economic blow against America's closest neighbor. What makes the decision even more explosive is the explanation coming out of Washington. A senior administration official told reporters that Canada, along with China, was one of the very few countries that retaliated against Trump's previous tariffs. According to the administration, Ottawa now has to be held accountable. The new tariffs are being presented as a direct response to those countermeasures.

The decision is expected to drive tensions between the two countries even higher. For decades, the United States and Canada have operated as tightly connected economic partners with supply chains moving billions of dollars every day. Now businesses on both sides of the border face higher costs, consumers could see rising prices, and fears are growing that the dispute could spiral into another full-scale trade war. For North America's economy, this marks the beginning of another chapter in a conflict with no clear end in sight.

Trump Stands Behind Netanyahu and Rules Out Any Arrest

Donald Trump has shut down any speculation that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be arrested while visiting the United States. In a public statement, Trump said in unmistakable terms that Netanyahu would not be arrested in the United States under any circumstances. Not in any way, shape, or form. While Trump never mentioned New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani by name, the timing left little doubt about who he was responding to. The controversy began after Mamdani told The New York Times that Netanyahu belongs in The Hague. He also said his administration was already in discussions with the city's legal department about whether Netanyahu could be arrested if he attends the United Nations General Assembly in New York this September.

During his mayoral campaign, Mamdani had already promised that if Netanyahu ever came to New York, he would instruct the NYPD to enforce the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. Trump has now made it clear that he sees no room for that. His message was aimed not only at New York but also at allies and adversaries abroad. For Netanyahu, it amounts to a guarantee that he will face no arrest while on American soil.

Welcome to America 2026: Trump Administration Seeks Phone Records of Journalists and Their Families

The Trump administration has taken its fight over reporting on the new Air Force One to another level. The Justice Department demanded not only phone and text records from several journalists, but also records belonging to their family members. Among those targeted were one reporter's mother and the spouses of two journalists. The goal is to identify confidential sources who provided information about security concerns involving the president's new aircraft. Back on July 10, prosecutors had already subpoenaed reporters to testify before a federal grand jury. Days later, additional subpoenas were issued to phone companies. According to court filings, some of the requested phone records go all the way back to January 1, months before the articles about the Qatar-donated Air Force One were even published.

The investigation began after reports revealed that security officials had raised serious concerns about the aircraft. Trump reacted angrily and ordered FBI Director Kash Patel to oversee the investigation. Defense attorneys describe the government's actions as an unprecedented attempt to intimidate reporters and expose confidential sources. They argue that once the government starts collecting phone records from spouses and family members, the message to every potential whistleblower is unmistakable: Talk to a journalist, and you may find yourself in the government's crosshairs. They have asked a federal court in Manhattan to throw out all of the subpoenas. Until the court rules, the government's actions have been put on hold. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Japan No Longer Rules Out Bringing Nuclear Weapons Into the Country

For nearly sixty years, Japan stood by a promise that few people ever questioned after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. No nuclear weapons of its own, no possession of nuclear weapons, and no nuclear weapons brought into the country. Now that last taboo is beginning to crack. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is calling for an open debate over whether American nuclear weapons could once again be stationed on Japanese soil. The government plans to completely rewrite its national security strategy before the end of the year.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has been pushing this shift for quite some time. Even before taking office, she argued that a country cannot rely on America's nuclear umbrella while at the same time refusing under all circumstances to allow American nuclear weapons onto its territory. In her view, that position no longer fits today's security reality in East Asia. The move did not come out of nowhere. Back in April, Tokyo abandoned another postwar principle by allowing exports of lethal weapons for the first time. At the same time, the government is building a centralized intelligence service, something Japan has not had in this form since the end of World War II.

Tokyo now points to France and Finland as examples. Both countries have strengthened their nuclear deterrence or rolled back long-standing restrictions. Opponents warn that Japan is heading down a dangerous road. They point out that Japan remains the only country in history to have suffered atomic bomb attacks. The fact that American nuclear weapons are now being openly discussed for Japanese territory would have been politically unthinkable only a few years ago. Today, it is officially on the table.

Judge Warns Government - Repairs at Lincoln Memorial Could Blow Up Criminal Case

The criminal case against former Olympian David Hearn has taken an unexpected turn. The biggest issue is no longer new evidence, but whether the government may have altered its own most important piece of evidence. A judge in Washington made it clear Monday that doing so could seriously damage the prosecution's case. If the damaged section of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is changed before the defense has a chance to examine it, prosecutors could face serious consequences.

Hearn, now 67, a former Olympic canoeist, has been charged with felony vandalism. Prosecutors accuse him of damaging the liner inside the famous Reflecting Pool. He denies every allegation and has pleaded not guilty. His attorneys now accuse the government of preparing to repair the very section that sits at the center of the indictment. According to the defense, the area has been fenced off, the water drained once again, and repair work has already begun even though defense experts have not yet been allowed to examine the material. After visiting the site, the defense says signs of alteration have already been found.

In court, prosecutors could not even say for certain whether the damaged section had already been changed. Federal attorneys said only that they were working with the Interior Department and trying to preserve the site as best they could. The judge was clearly unimpressed. Anyone who alters a crime scene before the defense has had the opportunity to inspect it does so at their own risk.

What makes the case even more explosive is the larger backdrop. Donald Trump and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro repeatedly blamed vandals for the damage. Independent reporting, however, concluded that the damage was most likely caused by flaws in how the pool's liner had originally been installed rather than by intentional vandalism. If it turns out that key evidence was altered or destroyed before the defense could complete its own examination, that could ultimately become more important than the original allegation itself. The trial is scheduled to begin on September 28.

Rome's Most Famous Priests Aren't Priests at All

Giovanni Galizia posed for the Calendario Romano when he was 17.

Walk into just about any souvenir shop in Rome, and you're almost guaranteed to see it. Sitting alongside Pope memorabilia, gladiators, and postcards is a calendar featuring strikingly handsome clergymen. Millions of people have now discovered it through social media. But the biggest secret behind the Calendario Romano isn't much of a secret anymore. Almost none of the men in its pages are actually priests. The idea was born in 2003 when photographer Piero Pazzi wanted to create a calendar that captured Rome the way gondoliers represent Venice. Instead of using real clergy, he photographed mostly models, volunteers, and participants in religious processions. Some of them aren't even Italian.

The calendar's most recognizable face is Giovanni Galizia. He became the cover model when he was just 17 years old. A family friend asked him to put on a priest's cassock and pose in front of a church in his hometown in Sicily. Today, Galizia is 39, works as an airline cabin crew manager, and still runs into his younger self on street corners all over Rome. He never earned a single royalty from the calendar. That, he says, was part of the original agreement from the very beginning. For years, all kinds of stories surrounded him. Some people believed he had once been a priest who left the Church for love. Others were convinced he was now an elderly former priest living quietly somewhere in Italy. None of it is true. Galizia still insists he has never been a priest and never had anything to do with clerical life.

Even after the truth became public, the calendar continues to sell extremely well. Tourists buy it as a joke, priests buy it too, and at newsstands around St. Peter's Square it has become almost as common as papal calendars and postcards. At its peak, around 75,000 copies were sold every year. Now it even has competition. The Calendario Gregoriano copies almost the entire concept, featuring another lineup of attractive "priests" photographed in front of churches across Italy. Pazzi considers it outright plagiarism and has taken the matter to court. Galizia, meanwhile, just laughs about it. People still recognize him all the time. Sometimes, he jokes, his face was more famous in Rome than the Pope's own calendar.

Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
