Back then, Infantino called it a natural partnership, saying both sides shared the same values, transparency, integrity, the protection of human rights, and the protection of children. Eight years later, that very same partner is throwing those words right back in his face, publicly, on the day of the biggest football event of the decade. Berset puts 2 pieces of evidence on the table, and both land exactly where they're supposed to. The first is the Folarin Balogun case, which we've already covered. A striker is suspended, a head of state picks up the phone and calls the FIFA president, and suddenly the suspension disappears in the middle of the tournament. When rules bend under pressure, Berset writes, every result becomes open to doubt. Politics, he says, has stepped directly onto the field. Balogun was allowed to play against Belgium, the United States lost 4-1 and was knocked out, but the damage remains, because a competition where suspensions can be erased with a phone call is no longer a real competition. Even UEFA said a red line had been crossed. And to this day, FIFA still hasn't published the reasoning of its disciplinary judge from the United Arab Emirates. A suspension lifted within days under pressure, without a single word of explanation. That's what arbitrariness looks like when it calls itself the rulebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second piece of evidence is quieter and dirtier. No single report could ever have captured the whole story. It only came together when the investigations of several journalists began to overlap, each discovery explaining the next.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April 2026, FIFA signed a sponsorship deal with ADI Predictstreet, a so called prediction market company backed by Abu Dhabi, reportedly worth 150 million dollars. Read that date twice. April 2, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The contract was signed just 1 week after the company was founded. A business barely out of the corporate registry lands one of the most lucrative sponsorship deals in global sports, and nobody inside FIFA thought that required an explanation. These markets don't take bets on who wins the match. They take bets on individual moments, a pass, a yellow card, a corner kick, anything a single player can create without changing the final score. It is an open door to fraud, Berset writes, and this World Cup pushed that door even wider open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who stands behind the company makes the story even harder to stomach. ADI Predictstreet is part of International Holding, a conglomerate led by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a senior security official in the United Arab Emirates widely known as the Spy Sheikh. Put that next to another fact from this very same tournament. The disciplinary judge who overturned Balogun's suspension within days under political pressure, and whose written reasoning FIFA still refuses to publish, also comes from the United Arab Emirates. That does not prove a connection, but the concentration is remarkable when the same small country provides both the World Cup's official betting partner and the judge who reversed a disciplinary decision after a president's phone call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If anyone still believes FIFA was looking for the best partner instead of the most willing one, the numbers tell a different story. The established prediction market company Kalshi explored the sponsorship opportunity, heard the asking price of 150 million dollars, and walked away. ADI Predictstreet stepped in instead, a company with no track record whatsoever whose trading platform wasn't even live on the day the agreement was signed on April 2. Infantino posed for photographs while signing the deal. Just weeks earlier, the tiny British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar had granted the company a gambling license. To this day, it still cannot legally offer its services in either the United States or the European Union. FIFA made a completely untested company from the orbit of a senior intelligence figure the official betting partner of the biggest tournament in world football, a tournament whose last final in Qatar was watched by more than 1.4 billion people, and both sides continue to keep the financial terms of that marriage secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of partner FIFA actually signed up with became obvious within weeks. For the World Cup final, ADI Predictstreet handled just 2 million dollars in betting volume. At the very same time, Kalshi stood at 1.1 billion dollars and Polymarket at 4.2 billion. The official betting partner of the World Cup is a minor player in its own industry, visible only because its logo appeared on television during every match. To attract users at all, the company offered coveted World Cup tickets in exchange for points earned through betting, referring friends, and promoting the platform on social media. Climb the leaderboard and win your ticket, a promotional video promised, showing a young man being transported from his living room straight into a packed stadium. Reality looked very different. Users say the company changed qualification deadlines without warning, rewrote the contest rules, and ultimately failed to deliver many of the tickets it had promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felix M., a 23 year old business student from Norway, says he wagered enough to generate 19,000 dollars in trading volume, enough to qualify for tickets to 2 knockout matches. He received none. The tickets were nothing more than bait to lure people onto the platform, he said, and in the end he bought his own ticket just to watch Norway defeat Brazil 2-1. Vuka\u0161in Petrovi\u0107, a 24 year old from Serbia, dreamed of seeing Cristiano Ronaldo play and believed he had secured a ticket for a knockout match after the platform notified him that he had won. We'll email you as soon as your ticket ships, the message originally said. Later, it simply changed to, no ticket yet. He did eventually receive another ticket for a group stage match, by email, on the day of the game, just 20 minutes before kickoff. The company admits it experienced operational problems and says affected users will be compensated. On its own discussion forum, it claimed the points system had to be changed because users were trying to manipulate it, something those users strongly deny. It is the perfect companion to a sponsorship deal that looked more like a publicity stunt than a legitimate business arrangement from the very beginning. FIFA attached its reputation to a company that could not even manage to deliver a free ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Money has a way of turning every kind of quality into quantity. It puts a price on things that were never meant to be measured that way. A goal, a foul, a moment of brilliance, everything becomes something to bet on, everything gets assigned a market value. Football, once a game about the final result, breaks apart into thousands of tradable fragments, and with it the line between sport and insider trading begins to disappear, because that is exactly what these markets reward, information that other people do not have. Once you remember the phone call to the FIFA president, it becomes impossible not to notice how close those two worlds suddenly are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berset doesn't spare the rest, either. The authority of referees has been undermined. Players have been subjected to racist abuse, some of it coming from elected public officials. Betting on every pass, every card, every corner kick. It is the balance sheet of the first World Cup with 48 teams and 104 matches, and it reads like the record of a sellout. Then Berset turns the tables and transforms the indictment into a challenge. The 2030 World Cup will be played mostly in Spain and Portugal, with Morocco serving as the third host nation. Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will each host 1 opening match to commemorate the very first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930. For that tournament, Berset proposes that a formal dialogue begin that very Sunday evening to build an integrity framework before the first ball is ever kicked. It is an offer FIFA can hardly refuse without admitting that integrity is no longer one of its priorities. What once happened behind closed doors and behind tinted glass is now on display across the internet in full 4K resolution, and nobody even feels the need to hide it anymore because hiding things has gone out of fashion. The world watches, like it's just another TV show, and slowly gets used to what it sees. That is the real danger. Not the individual phone call. Not the individual bet. The real danger is how casually so many people have started accepting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
