Imagine the lengths they went to. The Vice President of the United States, protected by an apparatus of guns, badges, and radios, appears in Bangor, Maine, to speak about a White House task force on fraud. Standing in line is a 37 year old woman who runs a cat account on the internet. She registered properly, received confirmation from the White House, and followed every requirement. Then 5 officers break away from that security apparatus, some of them armed, walk up to her, call her by name, and turn her away. Amanda, you're not coming in. When she asks why, she gets the sentence that outlives this entire incident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The effort itself tells the whole story. Anyone who assigns 5 armed officers to remove a satirist from a waiting line is putting on the record that he feels threatened by her. And JD Vance isn't threatened by a weapon. He's threatened by a comparison. Amanda McGonigle called him a sentient jar of mayonnaise. A damp paper towel wearing slippers. A man with the charisma of an unseasoned casserole. These are the kinds of lines no security detail can defend against, because they don't target the body. They target the dignity of the office, and that can't be shielded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McGonigle runs political accounts under the name CatsOnACouch, where she calls herself your favorite little political menace. She now has 2.1 million followers. It all began in 2024, when comments the current Vice President made back in 2021 resurfaced, the ones about childless cat ladies, in which Vance mocked women who don't have children. McGonigle turned that into a mission. Her stated goal is to have more followers than he does by the time his term ends in 2029. Right now it's 2.1 million versus his 15.4 million, and the gap gets smaller every time he hands her another moment like this.<\/p>\n\n\n

McGonigle's latest wanted poster, issue No. 47 of her publication Between Two Cushions News dated July 22, now lists Vance under the alias Ashley Furniture. He's accused of illegally lounging on couches, recklessly reclining in public, acting suspiciously around comfortable seating, and committing crimes against upholstered furniture too scandalous to print. Distinguishing features include a confused look whenever he's near anything upholstered, an unnatural tendency to lean back, and boat shoes nowhere near a body of water. The reward is 1 used couch. The fine print is aimed directly at any Secret Service agents reading along: If you're reading this, it's damn satire, relax. Daddy Elon already made comedy legal again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Henri Bergson explained more than 100 years ago why a man like Vance fears ridicule more than any accusation. Laughter, he wrote, is the punishment society uses against whatever becomes rigid and mechanical while pretending to be alive and untouchable. A person in power can live with disagreement, even hatred, because both still acknowledge his importance. Laughter doesn't. It treats the feared man as the one thing he least wants to be: ridiculous. A Vice President who responds to that with armed officers has proven the joke before the punchline was even finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 7, McGonigle filed a lawsuit in federal district court with the help of the Maine ACLU. The case is McGonigle v. Curran. She alleges retaliation for her political views and therefore a violation of the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech. She is asking the court to declare the government's actions unconstitutional, reimburse her legal fees, and prohibit authorities from excluding her from future official events involving the Vice President. \"It's absurd,\" she said, \"that the Secret Service is wasting its time going after a satirical cat account.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legal issue is sharper than the lighthearted surface suggests. A government can control private campaign events however it wants. Official public events are different, because the Constitution demands restraint, and Bangor was an official event. Registration was open to the public, invitations were handled through the White House, taxpayer money promoted it, and Vance appeared in his official capacity. When a public event is funded with public money, the government cannot exclude someone simply because it dislikes that person's views. Vance cannot use taxpayer funded safe spaces to silence dissent, McGonigle told the camera, and with that she described the case more precisely than any legal brief ever could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangor wasn't the first time. The lawsuit points to an earlier event in Des Moines, Iowa, where authorities withheld the access information that other registered attendees received. She drove about 5 hours to Bangor to attend as a dissenting member of the audience, wearing a T shirt that read, JD Vance cured my imposter syndrome. Her attorneys describe it as a pattern of repeated exclusion and call Bangor a textbook case of retaliation. The freedom to mock public officials, her attorney said, has been a cornerstone of political debate since the country's founding, and the First Amendment cannot simply be suspended because one of the most powerful men in America can't take a joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who thinks McGonigle is just some random troublemaker is underestimating her. As a teenager, she interned in the legislature, worked for a state representative, studied political science, and worked on state and national political campaigns before unsuccessfully running for the Falmouth School Board in 2025. When Vance attended a Republican fundraising gala in Nantucket in 2022, she joined around 150 protesters at Children's Beach with inflatable couches, cat ears, and signs portraying Trump as king and Vance as his court jester. You could say the court jester has now turned the Secret Service against the fool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case is pending before the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine. A judge will first review the claims and the government's response. If the government disputes the allegations, the next phase could include the disclosure of records related to the Bangor event. That would determine how far a government may go in controlling access to its own public events and whether it can exclude critics simply because it dislikes their views. It is a question that reaches far beyond a cat account, because this same administration has detained protesters, attempted to deport them, restricted press freedom, and turned government agencies against critics such as comedian Jimmy Kimmel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What remains is the sentence from that waiting line, intended as a threat but ultimately becoming a confession. We know where you stand. A government that knows where every individual stands, and uses that knowledge to pull a woman with a cat account out of a waiting line, has revealed far more about itself than about her.
