You can delay many things, but not every reality forever. On July 27, the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor will officially open to traffic. Donald Trump wanted to prevent exactly that. Back in February, he announced that he intended to block the opening. A ceremony that had already been scheduled was canceled, and afterward the explanations coming out of Washington shifted almost as quickly as the headlines. At one point it was allegedly unfair toll arrangements. Then it was Canada supposedly exploiting the United States. Trump even claimed that neither American workers nor American steel had been used to build the bridge. Neither claim was true. Yet the bridge has long become far more than concrete and steel. Roughly $300 million worth of goods cross this border every day. For Canada, the bridge is protection against Trump's tariff policy. For Michigan, it is a lifeline for its auto industry. Construction took nearly 13 years, and Canada paid the entire cost. Canada and Michigan now jointly own the bridge. Under the original agreement, any excess toll revenue was to be shared decades from now. That became the center of the dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, both governments reached a compromise. Half of the toll revenue will go into a regional economic development fund on the American side during the first 15 years of operation. Washington also gained a voice in approving larger toll increases. Only then did the White House clear the way for the bridge to open. But another detail stands out. Just hours before Trump announced his opposition, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick met with businessman Matthew Moroun, whose family has owned the neighboring Ambassador Bridge for decades. A few weeks earlier, Moroun had donated $1 million to a political action committee supporting Trump. These facts do not prove a direct connection. They do explain why Trump's attempt to block the bridge continues to raise questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the new bridge prepares to open, the old Ambassador Bridge remains a symbol of a different America. Aging infrastructure, endless truck traffic through residential neighborhoods, and houses left to decay for years define its surroundings. In the end, it is precisely the bridge Trump wanted to stop that is opening. Some projects simply cannot be held back forever, even when the president tries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some artists leave behind paintings. Others leave sculptures. Wim T. Schippers left behind a floor made of peanut butter. At the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, roughly 800 pounds of smooth peanut butter now cover a 270 square foot hexagon on the gallery floor. That is exactly how the Dutch artist instructed it should be done, down to the smallest detail. Every square foot was to receive precisely 3.2 pounds of smooth peanut butter, never chunky. Two museum employees spread the mixture evenly across the floor using taping knives. About 860 jars of Calv\u00e9 peanut butter were used because Schippers preferred that brand for its consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea is anything but new. Schippers first envisioned covering an entire museum floor with peanut butter in the 1960s. The project was finally realized in 1989. The museum later purchased the concept for \u20ac50,001 and exhibited it again in 2011. Now it returns as a tribute to its creator, who died last month at the age of 83. Schippers was regarded as one of the Netherlands' most unconventional cultural figures. He produced television programs, wrote poetry, composed music, and even staged a play performed entirely by German shepherds. His work was meant to provoke and force audiences to question what they accepted as art. Children loved the peanut butter floor. Adults argued over whether it qualified as art at all. Schippers probably would have enjoyed that argument more than anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even his funeral broke with convention. Friends buried him in a secluded forest without a gravestone. As his coffin was lowered into the ground, a saxophonist performed a melody by Thelonious Monk. Ironically, Schippers did not even like peanut butter himself. The museum, however, now serves peanut butter sandwiches in its caf\u00e9 to accompany the exhibition. It is meant to be used if the water supply collapses again. At the same time, warehouses are being filled with food, hygiene supplies, and equipment for people who depend on assistance. Across the peninsula, 800 food packages and 700 hygiene kits have already been prepared. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and crutches have also been placed in reserve. Another 600 aid packages are waiting in Sevastopol for people with disabilities, displaced residents, and families facing hardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new emergency assistance center is scheduled to open in Sevastopol on July 15. It will do more than purify drinking water. Backup battery systems are also being installed so residents can charge their phones, connect to Wi-Fi, and use computers during power outages. The regional state of emergency has been in effect since June 26. Occupation authorities officially justified the measure as necessary for economic and administrative reasons. In reality, it coincides with growing shortages of fuel and food, repeated failures of electricity and water supplies, and severe disruptions to public transportation. Water facilities have repeatedly shut down because pumps stopped working during blackouts. Long distance trolleybus service was suspended at the end of June. On July 6, power outages affected consumers across every city and district of Crimea. After the latest disruptions, mobile phone providers switched to emergency roaming, allowing internet access only to services approved by the authorities. When water, electricity, and communications all become unreliable at the same time, a state of emergency begins to look less like an exception and more like everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
