For the first time in two years, China has launched a ballistic missile into the South Pacific. Officially, it was a military exercise. In reality, it was a message. Not to the small Pacific island nations over whose heads the missile flew, but to the United States. The launch from a nuclear powered submarine demonstrated that Beijing's nuclear deterrent is no longer limited to land based systems. China can now maintain a credible nuclear strike capability at sea as well. Even after absorbing a first strike, it would still be capable of retaliating. That was precisely the point of the exercise. For the countries of the Pacific, however, the launch revived painful memories. For decades, their islands served as testing grounds for the world's nuclear powers. Contaminated land, cancer, and birth defects remain part of the legacy left by American, British, and French nuclear testing. That is exactly why China's missile launch triggered sharp criticism. The missile landed inside the nuclear free zone established under the Treaty of Rarotonga, which was specifically intended to prevent this kind of military demonstration. Australia, New Zealand, and Japan also complained that they received little or no advance warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beijing rejects those accusations, insisting that all relevant countries were informed in advance. At the same time, China's fleet of nuclear powered submarines is expanding faster than that of the United States. Militarily, the launch was therefore far more than an exercise. It demonstrated that China intends to test its nuclear deterrent regularly and will likely display that capability over the Pacific more often in the future. Any nation seeking great power status makes its capabilities visible. Anyone who does so must also accept that the world will be watching much more closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than three decades, dogs were banned from restaurants in Hong Kong. Only guide dogs and animals performing official duties were allowed inside. Since Thursday, family pets have been permitted to accompany their owners into selected restaurants for the first time. The new policy initially applies to more than nine hundred approved establishments. The government hopes not only to reshape everyday life for pet owners but also to strengthen the growing pet economy. Today, more than four hundred thousand dogs and cats live in approximately two hundred forty thousand households across Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many restaurant owners spent months preparing for the change. Partitions were installed, air purifiers purchased, pet strollers provided, and dedicated seating areas created for guests with animals. Some businesses hope the new policy will increase revenue by as much as fifteen percent. Others see it primarily as a social step forward. Dog owners should no longer have to leave their pets outside the door but instead be able to include them naturally in daily life. Owners prepared as well. Dog training schools now offer restaurant etiquette classes where animals learn to remain calm between tables, ignore other dogs, and behave comfortably around strangers. Clear rules still apply. Leashes may not exceed one and a half meters, dogs are prohibited from sitting on tables or eating from reusable human dishes, and certain breeds classified as dangerous remain excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hong Kong is gradually reshaping its public spaces. Pets are already permitted on selected ferry routes, on certain rural metro lines, and even inside some hospitals to visit patients receiving palliative care. What was once considered an exception is slowly becoming part of everyday life. Not everyone welcomes the change. But after more than thirty years, Hong Kong has decided that four paws deserve a place at the restaurant table as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flying Vanity - Trump's New Air Force One Looks Better but Is Less Protected<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump wanted to fly sooner, make a bigger impression, and finally put the new presidential aircraft into service. So the Boeing 747 donated by Qatar was retrofitted in record time and entered service before all of the usual work had been completed. That decision is now catching up with the White House. Multiple people familiar with the retrofit say the new aircraft does not have the same defensive systems as the previous Air Force One. Most notably, it is said to lack advanced systems designed to defend against incoming missiles. That became an issue during the NATO summit in Turkey, just a few hundred miles from Iran. At the urging of the Secret Service, Trump did not return on the new aircraft but switched back to the old Air Force One for the flight home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The White House insists the aircraft meets the highest security standards. At the same time, the Air Force acknowledges that certain capabilities were intentionally left out. It refuses to say which ones. Former officials dispute the administration's portrayal. A complete retrofit of a presidential aircraft, they say, normally takes well over a year. There simply was not enough time to fully prepare an aircraft that is expected to carry the Commander in Chief safely anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The issue becomes even more sensitive given the ongoing tensions with Iran. U.S. intelligence agencies have for years believed that Tehran continues to regard Trump as a potential target. That is precisely why the missile defense systems on the previous Air Force One were considered an indispensable part of its protection. Visible components of those systems are absent from the new aircraft. Pressure is now mounting in Congress. Several senators are demanding to know exactly which security systems were installed and which were omitted. The accusation is serious. Critics argue that the rushed deployment of a luxurious aircraft may have placed personal prestige ahead of the President's security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who flees Vladimir Putin is often seen in the West as an opponent of the regime. This case, however, shows that exile is no guarantee of loyalty. A Polish court has sentenced twenty nine year old Russian national Igor Rogov to seven years in prison for spying on behalf of Russia's Federal Security Service, the FSB, and for his involvement in a plot involving explosive devices. His wife received a three year prison sentence for assisting in the espionage operation. Rogov moved to Poland after Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine and publicly presented himself as an opposition activist. At the same time, he admitted to gathering information on Russian dissidents living abroad and passing it to the FSB. During the trial, he confessed to espionage but denied knowing about a plan involving explosives placed aboard cargo aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case began in 2024 when investigators discovered a parcel filled with explosives that was addressed to Rogov. Months earlier, after a heated argument, his wife had told mutual friends that her husband was working for the Russian security service. Rogov later told acquaintances that the FSB had threatened to send his father to fight in Ukraine unless he cooperated. The proceedings were held behind closed doors. Shortly before one of the hearings, Rogov was still holding a sign protesting the war in Ukraine. A short time later, the court convicted him as an agent of the very state he had publicly opposed. The trial may be over. The questions of how many similar cases remain undiscovered and whom people can still trust are only beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe Battles Over Encrypted Chats - Child Protection Versus Privacy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The European Parliament has approved legislation that would generally allow technology companies to scan private messages for child sexual abuse material. At the same time, lawmakers adopted an amendment with major consequences. Messaging services that use end to end encryption, such as WhatsApp and Signal, would be explicitly exempt from that kind of scanning. The amended proposal now returns to the Council of the European Union. If the Council rejects those changes, negotiations will begin all over again. The path to this vote was unusual. A similar proposal had already failed in March. This time, Parliament relied on a rarely used procedure. Rejecting the bill would have required at least 361 votes. Passing it, however, required only a simple majority of the lawmakers present. That allowed the proposal to move forward despite significant opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until 2021, European privacy rules prohibited platforms from scanning users' private communications. After that, companies were allowed to do so voluntarily. That temporary framework was extended several times before expiring in April, when Parliament and the member states failed to reach a compromise. As early as June, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola had pushed for the legislation to be approved quickly. Her actions drew sharp criticism from lawmakers within Parliament itself. Members who had been working on the bill accused her of bypassing the normal legislative process. Czech Member of the European Parliament Mark\u00e9ta Gregorov\u00e1 described the move as unacceptable and said it undermined Parliament's own position. One thing is now clear. The debate is no longer only about child protection or privacy. It is also about how far governments should be allowed to reach into private communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty Thousand Promised, Twenty Delivered - Trump's Gaza Force Remains a Symbol for Now<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When Donald Trump unveiled his peace plan for Gaza, he spoke of twenty thousand international peacekeepers. They were supposed to secure the Gaza Strip, protect reconstruction efforts, and prevent Hamas from reemerging as a military force. Nine months later, the International Stabilization Force is not struggling to deploy twenty thousand troops. It is struggling to deploy its first ten to twenty. The centerpiece of the plan has barely moved. The first Moroccan troops were originally expected to arrive in June. Their deployment has now been delayed once again. They will not even enter Gaza at first. Instead, they will train on Israeli territory near the border and perform security duties there before carrying out limited operations inside Gaza at a later stage. Other countries remain hesitant as well. Indonesia, which had once discussed contributing several thousand troops, suspended its participation after the wars involving Iran and Lebanon. The deaths of several Indonesian peacekeepers in Lebanon only reinforced that hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The broader peace process has also stalled. The ceasefire that took effect last October temporarily stopped the fighting, but the second phase has made little progress. Hamas continues to reject full disarmament. Israel has continued its military operations. According to Gaza health officials, more than one thousand people have been killed since the ceasefire began. At the same time, billions of dollars pledged for reconstruction remain unavailable. Only a small portion of the promised seventeen billion dollars has actually been delivered. Diplomatic movement does exist. Albania, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, and Morocco are close to formally joining the mission. Two major bases are planned, one near the Kerem Shalom crossing on the Israeli side of the border and another inside Gaza. Together they are intended to accommodate roughly fifty five hundred personnel. The logistics hub in Israel is largely complete. Construction of the actual mission site inside Gaza has not even started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reconstruction remains largely theoretical. Until Hamas gives up its weapons, projects are expected to move forward only in areas currently controlled by Israel. Many Arab governments have refused to finance such projects because they believe doing so would reinforce Israeli control. One notable exception is the United Arab Emirates. The UAE has already provided about one hundred million dollars and plans to build a new residential community near Rafah for approximately twenty five thousand displaced Palestinians. Even that project has yet to begin after Palestinian survey teams were stopped at a Hamas checkpoint before reaching the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gap between political promises and reality on the ground continues to grow. On paper, an international peacekeeping force was supposed to secure the transition to a new order. Today, not thousands of troops stand ready, but only the first handful. For the more than two million people living among rubble and tent camps, peace remains a plan, not yet a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
