Vance said that emails connected to Epstein show that Epstein hated Trump. He also claimed that Trump revoked Epstein’s access to his club after recognizing his behavior as problematic and reported him to authorities. In doing so, Vance challenged not only the hosts’ statements but also the way the story has been told for years. His accusation: people repeatedly point out that Trump and Epstein knew each other in the 1980s and 1990s, while later developments are barely mentioned.

Vance argued that this compression of time removes decisive points from the picture. According to his account, the relationship did not end in closeness but in a rupture. He claimed that information passed to authorities was part of the chain of events that later led to investigations into Epstein. The statements immediately triggered reactions because they touch on a part of the discussion that has been politically charged for years: what constitutes documented acquaintance, what constitutes actual support, and which events came later. Vance did not choose restraint. He attacked directly and turned the debate about Epstein into a debate about the selection and weighting of information that appears more than questionable.

Embarrassing: ZDF Backs Down Before Musk

ZDF removed part of a segment after Elon Musk applied legal pressure. The issue involved an edition of ZDFheute live from June 12 covering the unrest in Belfast. In the introduction, the program said that a “racist crowd” had carried out a hunt against migrants and that a British far right figure and Elon Musk had called for it. Musk’s lawyer challenged exactly that wording and demanded that it cease. The Danish company produces medications that are used by millions worldwide - against diabetes, against obesity, built on research data that cost years of work and enormous sums. That is exactly where hackers are now striking. The group FulcrumSec claims it had been inside the company’s systems since March. For more than two months. In the end, according to the claim, more than one terabyte of data was extracted. Then came the demand: 25 million dollars. According to the attackers, Novo Nordisk did not pay.

Now comes the second step. The group publicly states that it is seeking buyers for parts of the material. According to its account, this is not about individual spreadsheets or internal emails. It claims to include source code, documents on existing and not yet released medications, information from clinical trials, data relating to employees, doctors, and patients, as well as internal materials concerning production facilities and applications in artificial intelligence. Additional attention came from references to around 700,000 files totaling approximately 1.3 terabytes. That has not been independently confirmed so far. Novo Nordisk had already acknowledged the incident and described it as unauthorized access to a limited part of internal IT systems.

Even the hackers now say they will not publish certain information openly. Not out of consideration, but apparently out of calculation. Employee data, information on doctors, clinical trial participants, and technical production information are reportedly being withheld. The attack shows how extortion is changing. It is no longer only about shutting down systems. It is about turning knowledge into a commodity.

15 Indictments and a Term That Officially Does Not Exist

Federal prosecutors in Minnesota have filed charges against 15 people accused of deliberately obstructing operations by I.C.E. Investigators describe a coordinated structure involving observation, planning, and rapid mobilization against federal agents. At the center is the group Direct Action Minnesota, a left wing coalition of protest organizations. The allegations are extensive. They include conspiracy to obstruct federal officers, incitement to violent acts, interstate stalking, assaults on officers, and destruction of government property. The allegations are connected to a political line coming out of Washington. In 2025, Trump declared by executive order that the “Antifa” milieu, which does not exist as a formal organization, should be treated as a terrorist organization. Critics have long viewed this as an attempt to redefine resistance to immigration raids not only through policing but politically as well. The indictments also come at a moment when earlier cases did not proceed smoothly. According to defense attorneys, about half of earlier cases involving attacks on federal officers were dismissed because courts raised doubts about the evidence.

At least 7 people were injured and required medical assistance. The response was brief: people should wait for the proceedings and the evidence. The case gains additional weight through another point: during operations in Minnesota, two protesting U.S. citizens were shot and killed by federal agents.

Germany Before Summer Recess, but No Calm in the Country

Three and a half weeks before parliamentary summer recess, the new polling numbers do not show a government gaining trust. CDU and CSU lose one point and fall to 21 percent. SPD gains slightly after its previous low and reaches 12 percent. AfD remains in first place with 27 percent and expands its lead over the Union parties back to six points. Below that, little changes. The Greens stand at 15 percent, The Left at 11 percent, FDP reaches 5 percent, and BSW stands at 3 percent. At the same time, one figure remains especially striking: 26 percent of respondents are undecided or would not vote. That is significantly above the share of nonvoters in the last federal election.

The picture becomes even more striking when people are asked which party they trust to solve the country’s problems. Here AfD leads with 14 percent for the first time ahead of CDU and CSU at 13 percent. At the same time, 53 percent of respondents say they trust no party with political competence. For Friedrich Merz, the numbers bring no relief. During the G7 summit, his personal approval remains unchanged at 14 percent. Eighty five percent are dissatisfied with his performance. Even among Union supporters, dissatisfaction outweighs approval. Economic sentiment is worsening as well. Only 11 percent expect improvement in the coming years, while 65 percent continue to expect deterioration. Respondents identify the federal government and the coalition itself as the most important issue. After that come Iran and the war in the Middle East, the economic situation, Ukraine, the World Cup, and the debate over pensions. The picture does not look like momentum. It looks more like a country that sees many issues but hardly trusts anyone to solve them.

The Long Goodbye to the Department of Education

Donald Trump has not closed the Department of Education. He still lacks approval from Congress. But the administration is now moving out exactly those responsibilities that shaped the department’s daily work for decades - civil rights, special education, privacy, and large parts of practical administration. In the future, the Department of Justice is expected to take over complaints concerning discrimination in schools. The Department of Health is expected to oversee special education. For families, that initially sounds like administrative restructuring. In reality, these were the offices parents turned to when schools stopped responding. The Office for Civil Rights was often the last address. Complaints involving unequal treatment based on origin, gender, religion, or disability ended up there. Cases involving sexual violence, unequal rules in sports, or allegations that children were treated differently based on race were reviewed there. Schools that refused to comply risked losing federal funding.

Special education is also losing its traditional place. The department distributed billions and monitored whether states actually upheld the right to education for children with disabilities. At the same time, the administration has already shifted programs elsewhere: funding for poor school districts to the Department of Labor, student loans gradually to the Treasury Department, language programs to the State Department, and Indigenous education to the Department of the Interior. Officially, Washington speaks of less bureaucracy and better coordination. Critics see something else: parents may now have to deal with multiple agencies instead of one, procedures could become slower, and education risks being treated in places that previously had no role in educational decisions. It also remains unclear who will take over thousands of ongoing cases. Already today there is a substantial backlog. A Senate report recently referred to more than 2,700 unresolved cases involving sexual violence, discrimination, and disciplinary actions against students.

The department remains. But less and less of what it was once created for remains there.

First the Bombs, Then the Oil

Even before the final signature, under the agreement ending the war Iran is allowed to immediately resume selling its oil and fuel as an early financial incentive to bring the fighting to an end. With the signing expected this week, sanctions on those sales are to be lifted, along with restrictions on banking and transportation, including insurance that supports such transactions. On Tuesday, the supertanker Diona departed with crude oil from Chabahar, crossed the American blockade, and sailed out of the Gulf of Oman with its transponder turned on, the first such voyage since the blockade began in April. Shortly afterward, a second vessel followed, the Hero II. What had previously been smuggled in secrecy is now happening openly and with permission. The framework agreement electronically signed by Washington and Tehran on Sunday and expected to be finalized this week includes an extended ceasefire in Lebanon and removes restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz while opening the path to talks on the nuclear program. The immediate relief applies to oil, while permanent relief depends on whether Iran does what America demands, above all keeping the strait open and destroying its enriched uranium. Tehran will not gain access to the frozen billions for now, and Washington can reimpose the blockade as long as its military forces remain in the region.

A reconstruction fund is planned, one the administration spoke about in terms of 300 billion dollars, but to which, according to Trump’s own words, the United States does not intend to contribute. Access to roughly 100 billion dollars in frozen assets, most of which are held abroad, also remains disputed. Iran is demanding 12 billion immediately and another 24 billion during the sixty day negotiation period. In the United States and Israel, many oppose giving Iran money and easing the blockade before substantial concessions are made. Trump, who once accused Obama of flying cash into Iran after the 2015 agreement, is now choosing oil as the more acceptable path to provide money to the same country. Sanctions can be imposed again. Money that has already been paid out cannot be recovered. Whoever pays for fighting to stop gives away forever what existed only once as leverage.

Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
