After nearly four months of war, Washington and Tehran announced an agreement on Sunday that, for now, creates only one thing: time. Donald Trump declared the deal effectively completed, while Iran\u2019s Supreme National Security Council confirmed a memorandum with the United States. The agreement is scheduled to be signed on Friday in Geneva. Trump announced that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen to global shipping and that the American naval blockade against Iranian ports would be lifted immediately. This waterway is of enormous importance for oil, gas, and global trade. Since the beginning of the war, attacks, blocked routes, and uncertainty in the markets had placed pressure on energy prices worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreed framework is expected to include a sixty day ceasefire. During that period, military operations are to end, including those connected to Lebanon. Yet it was there, on the very same day, that it became visible how fragile this agreement remains. Israel struck suburbs of Beirut after Hezbollah launched rockets, and for a time the talks again appeared close to collapse. Only mediation from Qatar brought the final negotiations back on track. Pakistan was also involved in the mediation effort. In the end, the text was finalized late at night in Tehran. The most difficult questions remain unresolved. Iran\u2019s nuclear program has not been conclusively settled. The lifting of American sanctions was also not finalized. Both issues are to continue being negotiated over the next sixty days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, Tehran was careful not to create the impression that it had handed Trump a political gift for his eightieth birthday. According to Iranian representatives, final approval was timed so that in Tehran it occurred only in the early hours of Monday. Internationally, however, the agreement was received with relief. Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Qatar, and additional states welcomed the prospect of free navigation and easing the energy crisis. France offered assistance in reopening the route. Markets reacted immediately as well. Oil prices fell after Trump declared that ships would once again be able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Washington, political reactions remained divided. Democrats accused Trump of first escalating the war only to now present its end as a success. Some Republicans praised him as a negotiator, while others questioned whether the agreement could truly impose lasting limits on Iran\u2019s nuclear program. Vice President JD Vance spoke of a possible transformation of the Middle East for the next fifty years if Iran adhered to the agreement. Senator Lindsey Graham was more cautious. He welcomed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz but warned that Iran appeared to understand parts of the agreement differently than the American side. So in the end what remains is not a durable peace but a delay under enormous pressure. Ships are meant to sail again, the blockade is meant to end, the weapons are meant to fall silent. Yet the hardest questions were not solved but postponed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
