Tens of thousands of people took to the streets, separated by police lines and by political visions of who should belong to Italy in the future. The trigger was a citizen initiative called “Remigration and Reclamation,” which gathered enough signatures to force Parliament to consider its proposal. Fifty thousand signatures were enough to pull a concept from the political fringe into national politics. The proposal calls for sweeping measures against foreigners. These include forced returns, incentives for departure, and additional measures that critics believe could also be expanded to include people with legal residency.

Several thousand participants gathered for the march against migration. During the event, the Italian national anthem was sung. Participants repeatedly displayed the fascist salute and shouted “Duce,” the historical title used for Benito Mussolini. At the same time, a significantly larger demonstration moved through another part of Rome. Tens of thousands gathered for a rally in support of migration and against the initiative. Left wing groups, labor unions, and participants carrying Palestinian flags shaped the scene.

Thousands of police officers kept both sides apart. No violence was reported. For Giorgia Meloni’s governing coalition, the situation creates a political problem. While the Lega is openly willing to debate the initiative, Fratelli d’Italia and its more moderate partners are reacting far more cautiously. The reason lies in legal risks and tensions within their own camp. Legal experts and opposition parties warn that parts of the proposal could violate constitutional law and international anti discrimination standards because people would be categorized by origin, including naturalized citizens and their families. The conflict comes at a moment when Italy is simultaneously allowing more legal migration. The government has adopted programs designed to recruit hundreds of thousands of workers from non EU countries over the coming years.

Additional pressure comes from the new rules of the European Migration and Asylum Pact, which took effect Friday and are intended to reorganize Europe’s system after years of negotiations. Rome thus became, in a single day, a place where people argued not only about migration but about what kind of country Italy should become in the future.

Belfast Answers Fire With People

Belfast showed a different picture this weekend than it had in previous days. Where houses had burned, cars had been destroyed, and families had been forced to leave their homes, thousands now gathered to stand publicly against hate and violence. The unrest began after the arrest of a thirty year old man from Sudan on attempted murder charges following a knife attack that left a man partially blind. But in parts of Northern Ireland, a single crime turned into something larger within hours. Groups moved through neighborhoods where they believed migrants lived, setting houses on fire, burning a bus, and attacking police officers with bricks, bottles, and incendiary devices.

More than two dozen people lost their homes as a result. Twelve police officers were injured. Authorities openly described the groups as mobs. On Saturday, another part of the city visibly pushed back. Thousands gathered in front of Belfast City Hall for a rally against racism. Signs read that the problem was violence and cruelty, not origin. Others declared that racism is not patriotism. One speaker told the crowd that often all it takes is one case involving a person who is not white committing a crime for racist sentiment to flare up again.

Personal stories also shaped the day. A newly married couple left City Hall after their wedding and spontaneously joined the protest. The bride later said the previous days had shown both the worst and the best of Belfast. Similar tensions appeared in other parts of Britain. Glasgow also saw incidents targeting minorities, and one mosque temporarily closed for security reasons. Thousands took to the streets there as well on Saturday to oppose far right groups. They faced smaller groups where, according to reports, participants displayed Hitler salutes and shouted anti Muslim slogans. Belfast thus became, over a single weekend, a place where people argued not only about migration but whether fear turns into political anger or whether a city decides not to let itself be defined by it.

Eighty and Everywhere

Donald Trump turns eighty this Sunday, and the White House is visibly trying not to present that as a weakness but as an image of endurance, strength, and presence. For years, Joe Biden’s age was debated. Now the White House is presenting a president who is meant to appear visible everywhere at once. This week, Trump sat courtside in New York during the finals of the North American basketball league. Images showed him with his eyes closed, while social media quickly filled with speculation about fatigue and falling asleep. The White House denied it and later claimed the camera angle had been misleading.

Only hours later, Trump was already speaking with a journalist, commenting on a Wall Street Journal editorial, and discussing the downing of an American Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz. Shortly afterward came new military strikes against Iran. That appears to be exactly the image the White House wants to project. A president who speaks at any time, reacts at any time, and does not withdraw.

Karoline Leavitt said Trump proves his fitness every day through questions from journalists and a schedule that barely allows for breaks. According to the White House, recent weeks have averaged more than two dozen appointments per workday. But greater visibility also creates a side effect. It shows not only energy but age. Cameras repeatedly capture bruises on his hands, which the White House explains as the result of frequent handshaking. Observers point to a more hunched posture, closed eyes during meetings, and moments when Trump confuses terms or geographic references. Trump himself speaks openly about his age while also arguing against it. In Davos, he said he used to claim to be the youngest person in the room and now belongs among the older ones. He added that he does not feel old.

Speaking to retirees in Florida, he even said he was actually younger than many people in the room and could still identify with them. For his birthday, Trump is not planning a quiet weekend. For the first time, the White House grounds are set to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship cage event. That too carries a message. Not retreat. Not caution. Not the image of a president at the end of his career. But a president who, even at eighty, wants to show that he is still there and still visible.

Orbán Stays - But Hungary Has Moved On

Viktor Orbán remains chairman of his party, Fidesz. Delegates confirmed him for another year at the head of the political force that governed Hungary for sixteen years and lost power this spring. The result was decisive. 729 delegates voted for Orbán, and there were no challengers. Eight participants did not take part in the vote. This extends a political career that, apart from a few years at the beginning of the 2000s, has remained almost uninterrupted at the top of the party since 1993. What stood out was less the election itself than the language afterward. Orbán told the party congress that after the election defeat in April, he initially considered stepping down and saw it as a matter of honor. At the same time, he made clear that a complete withdrawal is out of the question for him.

Instead, he announced that he wants to gradually hand Fidesz over to a younger generation that, in his view, can win again. He also stated that money and international recognition do not interest him. His only goal, he said, is service to his country. At the same time, he described Fidesz as a fantastic governing party while admitting that it must change in order to become effective again in opposition and eventually govern once more. The background to these remarks is larger than a party congress. In the April election, the opposition party Tisa won 137 of the 199 seats in Parliament and thereby secured the constitutional majority.

With Peter Magyar taking office, Budapest has already reversed several policies of recent years. The withdrawal from the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court was reversed, sanctions on Russia were extended by another year, and Hungary agreed to support talks on a possible EU accession process for Ukraine. Orbán therefore remains party chairman. But for the first time in many years, he is no longer speaking as prime minister about how Hungary should be governed but about how his party might find its way back.

Congress Is Losing Its Most Important Right

The American Congress is supposed to have one responsibility that stands above almost everything else. It decides what the government spends money on. Yet since 1997, it has failed to pass regular budget legislation on time. What once looked like political disorder is increasingly becoming something more fundamental. In Washington, willingness is growing to bypass the normal budget process. This week, Republicans approved funding for two immigration agencies through the reconciliation process. That procedure was designed to allow certain laws to pass the Senate by simple majority and avoid gridlock. Normally it supplements the budget. Now it has been used to fund agencies for years and replace the usual process.

At the same time, Donald Trump is pushing his party to go even further. The president is demanding additional spending outside the traditional budget process, including 350 billion dollars for defense. Altogether, military spending under his plans would rise to 1.5 trillion dollars. For civilian programs, significantly lower funding levels than the previous year have been proposed. Democrats oppose increased military spending without comparable domestic increases. The dispute is now producing consequences beyond individual numbers. Budget committees, once among the most influential centers of Congress, are losing importance. Decisions are increasingly shifting into special procedures and direct negotiations between party leadership and the White House.

At the same time, the opposition accuses the administration of already withholding billions in funds even though Congress had approved them. Affected areas reportedly include housing programs, education aid, and medical research. Additional controversy recently erupted over a planned Justice Department fund that would have distributed nearly 1.8 billion dollars to people who claimed they had been wrongfully targeted by the government. After criticism from both parties, the plan was temporarily halted. Resistance is also growing among Republicans themselves. Susan Collins expressed doubts about another major package outside the normal budget process. Lisa Murkowski openly stated that another procedure of this kind would be very difficult and explained her opposition by arguing that agencies should not be funded permanently outside the regular process.

There is also no unity in the House of Representatives. Time, however, continues to run. A new budget must be in place by September 30. Negotiations are already behind schedule. Meetings have been canceled, public accusations exchanged, and the threat of another government shutdown is once again hanging in the air. The conflict therefore no longer revolves only around numbers. It revolves around whether Congress still exercises its most important right itself or whether it is gradually watching others take it over.

A Peace Is Announced - But Not Yet Confirmed

After nearly four months of war, Washington and Tehran are once again speaking about something that may become more than a ceasefire. Donald Trump declared on Saturday that an agreement would already be signed on Sunday and that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen completely immediately afterward. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also stated publicly that both sides were closer to a peace agreement than ever before. Pakistan has mediated between the United States and Iran since the ceasefire began in April and confirmed that an agreement is expected shortly.

But Tehran struck a less definitive tone. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated that no agreement would be signed on Sunday. He did not rule out further talks in the coming days. Within hours, this created a familiar picture of these negotiations. Washington is already discussing dates while Tehran still leaves open whether the same timeline even exists. Iranian media additionally raised the question of why Trump is pushing so strongly for this particular Sunday. They pointed out that the date coincides with his eightieth birthday. According to information from the talks, an initial agreement would extend the ceasefire by sixty days. During that period, Iran would fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and work with the United States on rules concerning nuclear material that could have military applications. In return, gradual sanctions relief, an end to the American blockade policy, and access to frozen assets are reportedly under discussion. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed cautious optimism but described certain points differently. Among other things, he stated that Iran does not plan transit fees for Hormuz, though he simultaneously spoke of possible service fees and left open how that would work in practice. Araghchi also said part of the agreement included an American commitment not to attack Iran militarily in the future.

The negotiations continue against the backdrop of escalating tensions in recent days. Drones have again been intercepted in the Persian Gulf, Israel and Hezbollah continue attacking one another, and the war has heavily disrupted global oil and gas transport. At the same time, Iran is now preparing memorial ceremonies for Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the beginning of the war during a joint American Israeli strike. Whether the announced signature becomes a durable peace remains uncertain. But for the first time in months, both sides are no longer talking about the next strike but about the conditions under which they will not carry one out.

<div class="gsp_post_data"
             data-post_type="post"
             data-cat="ticker"
             data-modified="120"
             data-created="1781402477"
             data-title="14.
