On Wednesday, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency called on Iran by a clear majority to fully cooperate with inspectors again, provide complete information on its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium, and grant access to the affected nuclear facilities. Twenty one of the thirty five member states voted in favor in Vienna, while Russia, China, and Niger voted against and ten abstained. The resolution was introduced by France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States. The decision comes at a moment when oversight itself has become a political dispute. Since the attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025, agency inspectors say they have no longer been granted access to the affected sites. As a result, the IAEA still has no way to independently verify the condition of those stockpiles that are only one technical step away from weapons grade material. According to the agency, Iran possesses 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60 percent. Agency chief Rafael Grossi recently warned that this amount could theoretically be enough for up to ten nuclear weapons, while emphasizing that this does not mean Iran actually possesses such weapons.

Tehran rejects the accusations and continues to describe the program as entirely peaceful. Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA, Reza Najafi, sharply criticized the resolution and accused Western states of ignoring the actual security situation. Under conditions of attacks and ongoing threats, normal inspections had effectively been destroyed. Iran had granted inspectors access to all unaffected facilities, he said, and the resolution completely ignored that cooperation. At the same time, the agency maintains that questions that have remained open for years regarding uranium traces found at undeclared sites still have not been answered. In the Western interpretation, those traces could point to earlier military activities. For now, the matter has not yet reached the United Nations Security Council. The international community last crossed that threshold in 2006. But the text adopted in Vienna contains a clear warning: the Board of Governors explicitly declares itself prepared to take further measures and decide on the timing and content of a possible noncompliance report to the Security Council. While ceasefires are being discussed outside, a different countdown has long been running in the background - whether oversight is still possible or whether no one can say with certainty anymore what lies behind the closed gates.

Bread Gets More Expensive, the Triumph Arch Gets Taller

While prices rise, more and more Americans calculate every purchase, and even the government is now trying to downplay the new inflation, Washington is planning a structure from another world. The triumph arch Donald Trump wants to build near the Lincoln Memorial is planned to rise 76 meters high, more than twice the height of the memorial itself and almost half the height of the Washington Monument. Construction is intended to continue almost without interruption: twenty hours a day, year round, in two shifts, for three years.

The first documents from the National Park Service read like the description of a construction site under emergency conditions. Massive cranes, concrete pumps, forklifts, continuous operation. At the same time, the approval process is being accelerated while agencies review whether the project could endanger air traffic, burden roads, or destroy the capital’s sightlines. The planned location lies directly along a flight path near Reagan National Airport, in the same airspace where a passenger plane and a military helicopter collided a year ago and sixty seven people died. So far, aviation authorities see no immediate impact on operations but are requiring red warning lights at the top of the structure.

Officially, the arch is intended to mark the two hundred fiftieth anniversary of the United States. Payment is supposed to come at some point from private money, leftover funds from other prestige projects, and likely public funding as well. No one yet knows exactly how much. At the same time, the East Wing of the White House has already been demolished for the new ballroom, the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial is being rebuilt, and a public golf course along the Potomac is being redeveloped. Critics say the result does not look like capital planning but like a man trying to leave his signature in stone, concrete, and sightlines.

Resistance is growing. Historians, veterans, and organizations have filed lawsuits. The accusation is not only grandiosity but also a lack of transparency. Congress was bypassed, standard review procedures shortened or skipped altogether. Even Washington’s usual height restriction of around forty meters is suddenly expected not to apply. While millions of people talk about rent, groceries, and rising living costs, the political center of the country is debating how tall a triumph arch may be. Some governments build housing. Others build memories of themselves.

A Knife, Burning Houses, and the Old Temptation of Collective Guilt

A man lies seriously injured in the hospital, having lost an eye and suffered deep cuts to his head, back, and face. Police say they found the suspected attacker with a kitchen knife on top of the victim. Shortly afterward, he reportedly stated at the hospital that he had killed someone and would kill again. The accused, a 30 year old Sudanese man, appeared in court in Belfast by video, refused legal representation through an interpreter, and did not comment on the allegations. He has been charged with attempted murder.

That could have been where the story ended: crime, investigation, court. Instead, something else began only hours later. In Belfast, masked groups moved through residential neighborhoods, tore bricks from walls, smashed sidewalks with sledgehammers, threw stones, bottles, and objects at police, and set fire to homes they associated with immigrants. Families had to be rescued from burning buildings, including people carrying babies. More than two dozen people lost their homes. Water cannons were deployed, buses burned, and trash containers as well. In some places, garden fences were dismantled and used as protection against police.

The images spread faster than the investigation. Within hours, a crime became an attack on entire neighborhoods. Even the victim’s family publicly reminded people that immigrants make a valuable contribution to the country and that this crime must not be used to turn people against one another. Police leadership and the government also rejected the idea of collective guilt. The attack is being investigated, and authorities said there is no indication of terrorism.

At the same time, it would be just as cheap to dismiss every concern raised by local residents as a pretext. The alleged attacker had entered Northern Ireland through the Republic of Ireland in 2023, applied for asylum, and was granted permission to remain. Cases like this raise questions, and those questions do not disappear simply because they are brushed aside on moral grounds. But there is an abyss between questioning policy and setting strangers’ homes on fire. Anyone who drives people out of their homes because they share the same skin color or country of origin as a suspect is not defending a nation. They are replacing the rule of law with chance.

Northern Ireland knows the consequences of that better than almost any other place in Europe. For decades, people there learned what happens when origin, neighborhood, and belonging become more important than the individual. Perhaps that is exactly what makes these days so bitter: that a place which knows the price of such thinking is once again struggling with it.

Why Friends Make Unfairness Worse - What Chimpanzees Reveal About Us

For years, a deeply human assumption has also been applied to other primates: people tolerate unfairness better when surrounded by friends. Closeness calms. Trust makes people more relaxed. That does not appear to be true for chimpanzees. A research team from Georgia studied 27 chimpanzees in Texas to see how they react when others receive a better reward for the same task. The animals exchanged plastic tokens for food and were free to come and go. Unlike many earlier experiments, they were not isolated in pairs but remained within their normal social groups. That is where things became interesting. Chimpanzees did not reject food more often when strangers were favored. They reacted especially strongly when close companions were nearby. Precisely where cooperation and reliability are strongest, inequality became less acceptable. The researchers suspect that chimpanzees observe advantages more closely when familiar partners are involved. Those who live together apparently pay closer attention to fairness.

Another finding stood out: not all inequality counts the same. Chimpanzees protested almost exclusively when they clearly received the worse outcome. If they got celery or carrots while others received grapes or bananas, they were more likely to reject the reward. But when they received something in the middle range, such as peanuts or orange slices, the reaction dropped significantly. Apparently frustration does not arise simply because others receive more, but because one personally ends up noticeably worse off. Another expectation did not hold either. When chimpanzees received the better reward, they did not reject it out of solidarity. Nearly half accepted the extra reward without hesitation. Researchers also found no stable differences between males and females. At first glance, the result seems small, but it is not. Perhaps the feeling of fairness begins not where we show empathy, but where we look most closely at the people nearest to us. Not every disappointment comes from hostility. Some emerge exactly where trust is strongest.

Accounts, Politics, and the New Front on Wall Street

Who decides who gets to participate in economic life? For a long time, that question sat at the margins of political debate, somewhere between banking regulation, anti money laundering laws, and contractual freedom. Now it stands at the center of a new conflict between Trump’s Department of Justice and some of America’s most powerful banks. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington under Jeanine Pirro has issued subpoenas to several major banks. According to reports, those affected include JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo. Investigators are seeking information about whether customer accounts were closed for political reasons - an accusation that in the United States is now commonly referred to as debanking. At issue is whether banks deliberately excluded conservative customers or politically controversial industries from the financial system.

Trump has been pushing the issue for months. Last year, he publicly stated that after the end of his first term he himself had been cut off from banking services. In August, an Executive Order followed directing regulators to determine whether banks had acted with political motives and in doing so violated existing law. At the same time, Trump personally sued JPMorgan and its CEO Jamie Dimon in January. The Trump family has also filed suit against Capital One over the closure of more than three hundred accounts connected to affiliated businesses. The banks reject the accusations. They argue that decisions are not made based on religion or politics but according to legal requirements related to money laundering, fraud, and financial risk. That is exactly where the legal problem lies: banks are not allowed to discriminate arbitrarily, but they also retain broad discretion over whom they choose to do business with.

What makes the investigation especially sensitive is that it apparently did not emerge from a direct referral by banking regulators. Prosecutors appear to have acted independently and are now examining whether a law from 1989 can be applied - the same law that was used after the financial crisis to pursue banks over questionable mortgage products. A preliminary review by banking regulators had already identified indications of possible unequal treatment. Industries mentioned included oil and gas, coal, weapons manufacturers, and the adult industry. At the same time, regulators pointed to public commitments made by banks regarding climate and equality goals. Suddenly a question far bigger than Trump has entered the room: At what point does risk management become politics - and who ultimately oversees the overseers?

Twenty Two Doctors and Still No Answers

How many doctors does it take to certify that a president is healthy? Five were enough for George H. W. Bush. Twelve were enough for his son. Donald Trump has now apparently raised the number to twenty two - and that, of all things, is raising new questions. According to the White House’s latest health report, Trump was evaluated during his most recent examination by twenty two specialists. That is not only significantly more than earlier presidents but even more than his own previous examinations. While Trump was examined by eleven specialists in 2019 and reportedly fourteen last year, the number has now increased again. Officially, this is presented as a sign of particularly comprehensive preventive care. The White House describes it as a complete and preventive examination conducted under the highest standards. Trump’s physician then declared that the president is in excellent health. At the same time, the administration continues to refuse answers to obvious questions: Which specialties were involved? Why exactly were so many specialists necessary? And why were there additional examinations in recent months that were only disclosed later or only partially explained?

Adding to this, earlier information had to be corrected. What was initially described as an MRI later became a CT scan. A medication for hair loss that had regularly appeared in earlier reports disappeared from the records without explanation. Last year, the White House had already largely blocked questions about another examination at Walter Reed. The president turns eighty on June 14. His predecessor Joe Biden left office at eighty two. Both belong to the oldest presidents in American history. That is exactly why the demand for greater clarity is growing - not for diagnoses, but for transparency. Because twenty two specialists can mean two things. Either extraordinary thoroughness. Or an extraordinary number of unanswered questions. The problem is not the number. The problem is that the public is expected to accept the calculation without being told how it was made.

Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
