In Spain and Italy and Greece and Bulgaria, boats and men are arriving. When will European capitals do something about this invasion? Or is it already too late?”

Eighty two years after the Normandy landings, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth spoke at a place that in Europe stands for liberation, the end of occupation, and the fall of a dictatorship, and used it to warn about something entirely different. Not tanks, not armies, not states stood at the center of his speech, but boats. At the American cemetery in Colleville sur Mer, Hegseth said that today “other European beaches are being stormed by other dangerous ideologies.” He named beaches in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria. Boats would arrive. Men would arrive. Then he asked when Europe’s capitals would do something about this “invasion” or whether it was already too late.

He did not explicitly use the word migration. Yet the direction of his remarks was hardly ambiguous. The language fits into a line pursued by the Trump administration for months, sharply criticizing European border policy, immigration, and the handling of right wing and nationalist positions. Already in its December security strategy, warnings appeared that Europe could become “unrecognizable” within twenty years. That this message was delivered on the anniversary of D Day makes the speech politically heavier than many other appearances. The historical reference was unmistakable. The landing of Allied soldiers in June 1944 remains in Europe a symbol of the liberation of a continent through international cooperation. Hegseth now contrasted that with a present in which borders are once again being declared the decisive question.

At the same time, another statement from Washington sparked criticism in the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office condemned remarks made by Vice President JD Vance after he linked the murder of eighteen year old Henry Nowak to immigration even though both the victim and the suspect were British citizens. Between remembrance of war and warnings about social change, a speech emerged in Normandy that spoke less about 1944 than about the political self image of the present.

Ceasefire on Paper – The Gulf Remains in a State of Exception

The pause in the conflict with Iran was supposed to create time. Instead, missiles and drones once again crossed the Persian Gulf. Bahrain declared on Saturday that Iran had launched ballistic missiles and drones toward Bahrain and Kuwait. The attacks were intercepted. Tehran did not conceal the context of the strike. According to Iran, the targets were American military installations. Specifically named were Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and units of the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. Iran described the action as a response to American strikes against surveillance facilities on Qeshm Island and near Sirik. According to Tehran, those facilities supported border protection and the security of international shipping. Washington described the situation differently. The U.S. military stated that Iranian drones had posed an immediate threat to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Several projectiles were intercepted. Central Command later confirmed the destruction of additional Iranian attack drones over the Gulf. Once again, this shows how unstable the situation has become. Officially, a ceasefire remains in effect. In reality, both sides have already returned to military responses and accuse one another of violating agreements.

The Strait of Hormuz remains especially critical. A significant share of global oil and gas transport passes through this narrow waterway. Energy prices are already coming under renewed pressure and the economic consequences extend far beyond the region. At the same time, the Trump administration continues trying to push Iran toward an agreement. New talks over the nuclear program and an extension of the ceasefire remain under discussion. Meanwhile, economic pressure continues to grow. Reports suggest Washington is examining whether frozen Iranian assets could partly be redirected for the use of Gulf states that suffered war related damage. Pakistan is also attempting to mediate. But while diplomats travel and drones continue to launch, the central question remains unanswered: whether this ceasefire still exists or whether only its name remains.

After Gasoline, Food Begins to Disappear – Unrest Grows in Crimea

First fuel became scarce. Now reports are increasing across Crimea of empty shelves and early restrictions on food sales. Residents in Simferopol and Sevastopol report rising demand, individual purchase limits, and products temporarily disappearing. According to reports from local chats, videos, and customer accounts, some stores have already introduced restrictions. In some places customers may buy only limited quantities of sunflower oil or pasta. At the same time, reports are increasing of shortages in sugar, buckwheat, rice, flour, salt, and other staple goods. Videos circulating on social media show half empty shelves. Users report visiting several stores in succession without finding sugar or specific foods. In some cases there were also reports of empty containers and notices explaining sales limits. For now, conditions do not appear uniform everywhere. Residents in other parts of the peninsula say they have not yet experienced shortages themselves. At the same time, many of them regularly see similar reports coming from neighboring cities.

The background goes back several days. After restrictions on gasoline sales were introduced, an informal fuel market emerged across the peninsula. At times prices reached levels far above previous norms. Reports also increased of fraud involving gasoline and fuel vouchers. Now tourists are beginning to feel the effects as well. Travelers report being unable to leave Crimea easily with their vehicles. Local authorities are therefore discussing special procedures to provide departing tourists with fuel. Officially, officials still deny any broader supply crisis. But when shortages begin affecting basic food after fuel and sales limits start appearing, the peninsula faces a problem that can no longer be explained solely by isolated supply disruptions.

Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends. Normally, a mayoral election here would attract little attention beyond the region. But this Sunday’s runoff has triggered a debate that now extends far beyond the town itself. Stefan Hartung advanced to the second round as the candidate of Free Saxony, a party classified as extremist by Germany’s domestic intelligence service. At the same time, Hartung confirmed that he remains a member of Homeland, formerly known as the NPD. German courts have previously described that party as ideologically akin to National Socialism. Since the end of the Second World War, no mayor from this political spectrum has been directly elected in Germany. That is precisely why many observers see this election as more than a local decision.

Hartung himself rejects being labeled a neo Nazi or extremist. He describes such labels as politically motivated and says people support him because they trust him to lead the city. In the first round he received roughly 29 percent of the vote and finished ahead of other candidates. His opponent in the runoff comes from the CDU. Locally, many people describe their dissatisfaction less through ideology than through everyday life. Conversations focus on aging infrastructure, missing opportunities, economic development, and immigration. According to official figures, the share of residents with a migration background in the town has increased significantly over the past two decades.

Added to this is a feeling that has repeatedly been described across parts of eastern Germany for years, that decisions are made elsewhere and local concerns are not taken seriously. Hartung first became regionally known in 2013 when he helped organize protests against housing for asylum seekers. Since then, he has steadily expanded his profile. Observers note that his social media presence has also played a role. There he combines proposals for urban development with posts about crime and migration.

The development also places the AfD in a difficult position, which in Saxony is likewise classified by the domestic intelligence service as a confirmed right wing extremist movement. In the short term it lost votes to a smaller right wing party. In the long term, however, another effect emerges: when political positions move further outward, other forces automatically appear more moderate. Regardless of the result, this election already shows something many in Germany long considered impossible, that historical distance alone no longer guarantees a political boundary.

An Island for a Few – And a Dispute Making Albania Bigger Than Planned

In Albania, resistance has been growing for days against a luxury project associated with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. Planned is a resort worth around 1.4 billion dollars on the uninhabited island of Sazan along with additional hotel development along the coast of Zvërnec, an area that has been under close observation for years because of its wildlife and fragile landscape. While demonstrators took to the streets in several cities, Prime Minister Edi Rama tried publicly to push back. In a lengthy statement he argued that international reports had significantly exaggerated the scale of the protests. According to his figures, around 2,000 people had recently demonstrated and even the largest gatherings never exceeded about 8,000 participants. Rama asked how a local protest movement had turned into international headlines. The portrayal of a nationwide crisis, he argued, did not reflect reality on the ground.

At the same time, he defended the project in principle. Albania needs investment and aims to establish itself more strongly as a premium travel destination. The project, he argued, should demonstrate that economic development and environmental protection can coexist. Yet another part of his statement stood out even more. Rama repeatedly emphasized that there is currently no approved construction project. There is no building permit and no construction start, only a vision and a plan. That is precisely where critics focus. Environmental groups and opposition politicians argue that public documents and transparent approval procedures are missing. They are demanding full disclosure of all records.

Additional questions emerged through reports from visitors on site. Representatives of environmental organizations said they had already observed excavators, earthworks, and trucks. Others reported a concrete fence with barbed wire near the coastline and restricted access to land. The opposition therefore accuses the government not only of lacking transparency but also raises broader political questions surrounding the project. Supporters see an opportunity for investment and international visibility. Critics increasingly see more than a construction project. They see a conflict over how decisions are made and who controls the future of the coastline.

When the Truth Hangs from a Bridge

Above a highway in the hills hangs a banner beside a rainbow flag, and written across it in rough letters is the claim that the Epstein files are longer than the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. It is a sentence with dark humor, and that humor becomes the final form protest takes when orderly channels fail.

Where all records were promised and that promise remained unfulfilled, citizens are left with a banner over a bridge. Yet beyond the mockery one should not forget what is at stake. Behind those files stand crimes against minors, against women, and the names of powerful people who may have been connected to them, and that is precisely why the pages are not shown. That is the true message of the image. The longer the file, the more powerful those listed inside it, and the more securely it remains sealed. The truth a state owes its citizens ultimately hangs from a railing above traffic because it can no longer be found anywhere else. And while the cars continue passing below, the question remains: who does a country belong to when the most important things can only be read on a banner.

<div class="gsp_post_data"
             data-post_type="post"
             data-cat="ticker"
             data-modified="120"
             data-created="1780820924"
             data-title="07.
