Anyone walking through Vilnius these days is confronted with a sight that would have been unthinkable just a few decades ago. German soldiers march through the streets of the Lithuanian capital, travel to their bases, and openly wear their uniforms in public. Instead of suspicion, they encounter gratitude. Instead of hostility, they are invited out for a beer. For many Lithuanians, the reason is simple. Fear of Russia is greater than any memory of the German occupation during World War II. Liutauras Ceprackas, a chef from Vilnius, expresses the sentiment openly. If Russia were to kill a German soldier, he says, Germany would be directly involved. That prospect alone helps keep his country safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the 45th Armored Brigade, Germany has stationed a complete combat brigade outside its borders permanently for the first time since the end of World War II. By 2027, roughly 4,800 soldiers are expected to serve in Lithuania. The small Baltic nation of fewer than three million people borders both the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, Moscow's closest ally. The deployment represents a shift that is becoming increasingly visible across Europe. For decades, the continent's security was viewed as the responsibility of the United States. But since Donald Trump repeatedly raised doubts about America's commitments to its allies, many European countries have begun seeking additional security guarantees. Germany is increasingly moving into a role that few would have expected only a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Lithuania, the German brigade has become far more than a symbol. Former Defense Minister Laurynas Kasciunas describes the force as a kind of second army for his country. Public sentiment reflects that view. Polls show broad support for the German presence. Retailers and businesses even offer discounts to German soldiers. One well-known television host publicly encouraged people to buy German soldiers a beer whenever they meet them. Many soldiers themselves are surprised by the reception. One German major described a jogger who went out of her way during an exercise to thank them for being there. Others tell stories of schoolchildren waving, or elderly residents shaking their hands and saluting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The history between the two countries remains complicated. Lithuania was occupied by German forces during World War I and again during Nazi rule. During that period, large portions of the country's Jewish population were murdered. Germany therefore approaches this history cautiously. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius laid a wreath at the Paneriai memorial site, where German Nazis and their collaborators murdered tens of thousands of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today's Lithuania, however, it is the memory of decades of Soviet rule that shapes public consciousness. Many Lithuanians associate their own historical experiences more closely with Moscow than with Berlin. It was only after independence that many crimes committed during the German occupation were comprehensively examined. For many people, Germany today represents a democratic Europe. Russia, by contrast, evokes fears of another war of aggression. Historian Rimvydas Petrauskas puts it bluntly. The Germans learned from their history. The Russians, he says, ignored the lessons of theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many German soldiers, Lithuania has become an unusual experience. While they often encounter skeptical looks or comments in Germany, many report a much more relaxed daily life in Vilnius. Some now wear their uniforms openly in public, something they frequently avoid at home. On the facade of Vilnius City Hall hang two plaques. One commemorates George W. Bush's promise that any enemy of Lithuania would also be an enemy of the United States. The other bears the words of Friedrich Merz. The defense of Vilnius, the German chancellor declared, is equivalent to the defense of Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many Lithuanians, that is exactly the message that matters today. Pollster Vladas Gaidys summarizes it bluntly. The United States no longer feels like a guarantee. The German soldiers, meanwhile, are already there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belgium turned French fries into a national trademark. That makes the situation now unfolding across the country's fields all the more painful. Farmers are dumping potatoes because nobody wants to buy them. Kris D'haeyere from Hermalle-sous-Huy was forced to dump roughly one thousand tons of his harvest back onto the fields. The potatoes sat in storage facilities for months, failed to find buyers even at only a few euros per ton, and eventually began to sprout. What could have produced roughly 200 million servings of fries became a financial disaster. What initially appears to be the problem of individual farmers has long since become a European issue. Following an exceptionally strong harvest, Europe is sitting on a surplus of roughly five million tons of potatoes intended for industrial French fry production. Prices have collapsed. Three years ago, a ton of potatoes in Belgium sold for nearly 600 euros. Today, the market price is effectively zero. D'haeyere estimates his personal losses at around 160,000 euros. For the coming season, he is sharply reducing the amount of land he plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overproduction is also visible in Germany. In Berlin, thousands of tons of potatoes were distributed free of charge. The event quickly became known as the Potato Flood. At the same time, key export markets are weakening. American tariffs have made European fries more expensive in the United States. Exports have declined. Saudi Arabia is also ordering less than before. Meanwhile, China and India are entering the global market with growing volumes of frozen fries. Many restaurants are paying closer attention to price than origin as costs continue to rise. Additional pressure comes from developments in the Middle East. Higher energy prices are making refrigeration, storage, and transportation more expensive. Fertilizers are also becoming costlier as major supply routes are disrupted. Inflation is adding to the problem. People who dine out less also order fewer fries. Since a significant portion of consumption takes place outside the home, the industry feels the impact immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumer habits are also changing. Medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy are altering eating behavior for many people. Demand for highly processed and fried foods often declines. Global demand for frozen fries is still growing, but far more slowly than in previous years. Belgian farmers therefore face an uncomfortable question. Is this a temporary crisis, or the beginning of a permanent shift in the industry? While Jean-Pierre Van Puymbrouck still hopes to pass his farm on to his daughter one day, Kris D'haeyere views the future much more skeptically. After dumping one thousand tons of potatoes, his conclusion is brief. The good years, he says, may be over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
