Donald Trump was supposed to be talking about a renovation. Instead, it turned into the latest exercise in numerical gymnastics from the White House. During a Cabinet meeting, the president claimed that Barack Obama and Joe Biden had spent \u201chundreds of millions of dollars\u201d repairing the famous reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Yet, according to Trump, they had failed. His own solution, by contrast, was supposedly a bargain. The renovation, he said, would cost only about $1.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The numbers tell a very different story.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reflecting pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument is one of the most famous locations in the United States. Built in the 1920s, it stretches more than 2,000 feet and became known around the world when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech there in 1963. For years, however, the site has struggled with problems. The pool was losing water, algae growth became an issue, and parts of the structure showed significant wear and deterioration.<\/p>\n\n\n

Under Barack Obama, a comprehensive modernization project was carried out. The work lasted two years and was completed in 2012. The reflecting pool received a new circulation and filtration system designed to use water from the nearby Tidal Basin instead of valuable drinking water. Its depth was altered to conserve water. The bottom was redesigned to improve the reflection of the Washington Monument. Additional pedestrian pathways were also constructed around the site. The project cost approximately $34 million. Subsequent contracts increased that total by at least another $1.3 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joe Biden, on the other hand, did not undertake a comparable large scale renovation. Chuck Sams, who led the National Park Service during much of the Biden administration, stated that a full reconstruction had been considered. However, the estimated cost exceeded $100 million. As a result, the project was never carried out. Instead, the pool was regularly cleaned in order to keep algae growth under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this, Trump now claims that Obama and Biden spent \u201chundreds of millions of dollars\u201d and failed. There is no evidence whatsoever to support that claim. It is entirely fabricated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story becomes even more remarkable when looking at Trump\u2019s own project. In April, the president announced plans to coat the entire pool with a new finish in what he described as an \u201cAmerican flag blue\u201d color. The decades old granite surface, he said, was leaking \u201clike a sieve.\u201d At the same time, he claimed the work would cost only $1.5 million. Later, he said the total would be no more than $2 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The documents show an entry in the official U.S. federal spending database, USASpending.gov. There, Atlantic Industrial Coatings is listed as a contractor for the National Park Service. Particularly striking is the highlighted amount. The federal database already shows contract obligations totaling $13.1 million across two transactions. This is the same company that was awarded the work on the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool. The information does not come from political opponents but directly from our review of U.S. government spending and procurement records. The federal records themselves therefore document a substantially larger financial commitment than the $1.5 to $2 million that Donald Trump publicly claimed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Federal records, however, show something very different. Based on contracts awarded so far, the costs already amount to at least $14.8 million. The work includes extensive cleaning, steam cleaning, disinfection measures, sandblasting, additional surface treatments, and new waterproofing efforts to prevent further leaks. During a Cabinet meeting, Trump proudly reported that workers had removed more than ten containers of debris, cleaned the pool, coated it, and protected it with what he described as a \u201chighly advanced form of rubber\u201d to prevent future damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about the enormous discrepancy between Trump\u2019s statements and the actual contract values, the Department of the Interior avoided providing a direct answer. Spokesperson Katie Martin stated only that the costs reflected additional labor, more materials, extra equipment, and extended working hours required to ensure completion before celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. What remains is a remarkable balance sheet. Trump accuses his predecessors of wasting hundreds of millions of dollars. In reality, the major Obama era renovation cost approximately $34 million. Biden did not undertake a comparable reconstruction project. At the same time, Trump continues to describe his own project as a $1.5 million undertaking while official contract records already show nearly ten times that amount. In the end, this is no longer merely a story about a reflecting pool. It is about why the numbers coming out of the White House repeatedly tell a completely different story from the documents produced by the administration itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our investigations are also continuing in other areas. And as so often happens, the trail leads back to the same problem. Funds disappear into opaque structures, federal expenditures are not fully disclosed to voters, and direct questions are met without clear answers. Instead of transparency, there are evasions. Instead of numbers, there are stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
