There are documents that are disturbing precisely because they do not come from opponents of a government, but from agencies that are supposed to be working for that government itself. We have exactly such a document in our possession. The Colorado Information Analysis Center, a so called Fusion Center, one of the institutions created after September 11 to identify terrorist threats at an early stage, sent an internal warning to law enforcement agencies across the country in March. The subject of that warning was not a foreign terrorist cell and not a criminal gang. The subject was the Department of Homeland Security itself, the federal agency under which Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, operates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report explicitly warns that violent white extremists could interpret ICE recruitment advertising and Department of Homeland Security messaging as confirmation of their own ideology. More directly still, the analysts believe it is possible that right wing extremists could attempt to infiltrate ICE or establish themselves within the agency and then carry out politically or racially motivated violence against migrants, the public, or security personnel. It also states that government messaging could be understood by such groups as permission for vigilantism or attacks against people they perceive to be immigrants. A Fusion Center is not an ordinary law enforcement office but a joint intelligence and analysis center where information from police departments, security agencies, and other government institutions is collected and evaluated. These centers are intended to identify threats early and issue warnings to authorities when they detect risks to public safety.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The analysts in Colorado reached a conclusion that has to be read twice to fully grasp what it means. They wrote that social media posts used by the Department of Homeland Security to recruit new ICE personnel contained so many elements associated with white supremacist ideology that violent extremists could interpret them as a call to action. The bulletin specifically warned of an environment that could make it easier to justify vigilantism and violence against people perceived to be immigrants. An agency whose mission is preventing terrorism is therefore warning about the messaging of another agency within the same government. Something like this has not happened before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report points out that on December 15, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security published the phrase: \"All of America wants remigration for Christmas.\" Just one day later, a post appeared from the Canadian group Second Sons Canada featuring a banner with nearly identical wording. The passage is cited in the document as an example of how government messaging and content from extremist groups can overlap in substance or be adopted by third parties.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The concern among the analysts goes deeper than the impact on the public alone. They fear that these posts could encourage white racist extremists to apply to ICE or infiltrate the agency and then carry out racially motivated violence from within. The public, other ICE employees, and local law enforcement personnel could all be placed at risk. It describes a scenario in which a government law enforcement agency attracts exactly the kind of people from whom law enforcement agencies are supposed to protect society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the analysts in Colorado examined were not vague suggestions but specifically identified posts. They highlighted tweets that imitated the imagery and tone of far right online subcultures and drew on language, song lyrics, and symbols that are commonly found among violent white racists, neo Nazis, and supporters of the Third Reich. One example discussed extensively in the report came from January 9. On that day, the Department of Homeland Security posted an image on X showing a lone man on horseback accompanied by the phrase that \"we will have our home back.\" To many observers this may look like romanticized Wild West imagery. But those familiar with the background recognize something else. According to the bulletin, the phrase is a lyric taken from a song that has become popular within white nationalist organizations and has been adopted by them. The lyrics speak about taking one's home back through blood or sweat, wording that frequently appears in white supremacist rhetoric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the report presents side by side are concrete examples. On the left are government posts containing phrases such as \"Which path will you choose?\" or recruitment messages encouraging people to join ICE. On the right are images from far right online communities using similar either or frameworks while openly promoting Nazi or racist content.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

At this point the bulletin goes into detail, and it is precisely the detail that makes the issue so difficult to absorb. Members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front were recorded chanting the refrain of this song, specifically the phrase that one day they would have their home with God. Lines from that same song also appeared at the beginning of the manifesto written by a white racist who murdered three people in a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2023. The song is titled We'll Have Our Home Again and was created by the group Pine Tree Riots. After The Intercept had previously reported on the Department of Homeland Security's use of the song, lawmakers called on Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, to stop running the advertisements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, the use of a song known in neo Nazi circles does not stand alone. The analysts describe a pattern, a repeated use of visual and linguistic elements that overlap with symbols that have historically played a role in extremist subcultures. A second example is the term remigration, a phrase frequently used by the Department of Homeland Security. Police analysts in Colorado explain that the term dates back to Germany in the 1930s, where it was used in connection with calls for the forced removal of Jews. A third example is the so called Moon Man meme. The character originated from a McDonald's advertisement in the 1980s and later became popular among internet racists because its appearance resembled a member of the Ku Klux Klan. The bulletin references a user who responded to a Department of Homeland Security post with this character and wrote that now was the time, using an abbreviation that stands for a phrase calling for the mass killing of Black people. The same user attached a modified version of the meme depicting the character holding a rifle in front of a swastika flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report identifies another example of how symbols and characters can be appropriated by far right communities. A Department of Homeland Security post featured the character Mac Tonight, which was later adopted by white extremists online under the name Moon Man. According to the document, this prompted a response showing an armed figure standing in front of a swastika flag alongside the abbreviation TND, which is used in certain online circles as a code associated with violence.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Claire Trickler McNulty, who worked as an ICE officer for eight years under Obama, under Biden, and during Trump's first administration, described the evidence presented in the bulletin as fairly devastating. She said it was surprising in itself that a Fusion Center would issue such a warning to law enforcement agencies directed at Department of Homeland Security messaging, even if the warning appeared appropriate. Elsewhere she stated that she appreciated how clearly the authors had assembled the dangers associated with this white nationalist imagery. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report includes a disclaimer through which the analysts themselves attempt to establish limits. They emphasize that they are not claiming an ideological alignment between the Department of Homeland Security, ICE, and white supremacist ideology. But what the analysts describe can hardly be contained by that cautionary note. They demonstrate that the posts quickly gained traction among white racists and that such individuals began encouraging one another to apply for positions as immigration officers. During the period in which these Department of Homeland Security posts circulated, the bulletin warns that violent white racist groups were simultaneously encouraging their followers to join ICE and speculating that ICE itself could transform into a white racist militia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The examples the analysts provide are disturbingly specific. In one social media channel described by the report as neo Nazi and accelerationist, users discussed infiltrating ICE and using the agency's authority to form a breakaway militia while alluding to a nationwide race war. According to the bulletin, users on a neo Nazi forum discussed the advantages of joining ICE and viewed it as an opportunity to accelerate conflict within the United States and assault what they called race traitors. One user claimed that someone within this network had already been working as a supervisor in an ICE contracted detention facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The images presented in the report are cited as another example of how language used in official ICE posts was connected to already existing extremist content. On the left appears a Department of Homeland Security post with the phrase \"We will get our home back.\" On the right is an image containing almost identical wording that was used within circles associated with Patriot Front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document notes that this phrase had already appeared in songs and messages circulating within white nationalist communities. The side by side comparison suggests that government imagery and already established extremist slogans have, in some cases, moved so close together that the distinction between the two may increasingly become blurred to outside observers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The posts in question were created during the tenure of former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was dismissed in March and replaced by Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin. Before Noem, the combative DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin had already departed the agency. She had been responsible for the department's social media strategy. The Department of Homeland Security itself defended its online methods, describing them as bold and effective. Criticism also came from outside government agencies. Organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center accused the Department of Homeland Security of using white nationalist imagery and language to recruit new employees and target immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One aspect of the bulletin, however, remains controversial even among experts. The analysts argue that Department of Homeland Security messaging could also provoke violence against law enforcement itself, specifically from people who oppose white racism. According to the report, antifascist activists could misinterpret Homeland Security messaging and begin viewing all ICE personnel, along with police officers and government officials, as supporters or accomplices of white supremacy, thereby deriving what they perceive to be a justification for violence against those individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the document, the authors themselves emphasize that the warning is not based on fully completed intelligence assessments. According to the text, the information was gathered from publicly available reporting and from law enforcement and security databases and has only been partially cross checked. It is explicitly described as neither final nor fully evaluated intelligence. The bulletin was distributed to law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency services, crisis management offices, Fusion Centers, and federal partners. It also lists specific contacts at the Colorado Information Analysis Center and the FBI through which suspicious activities could be reported immediately.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

It was precisely this equivalence that Spencer Reynolds rejected. Reynolds, a former DHS official who advised the agency on intelligence gathering, domestic terrorism, and other national security matters and who now serves as senior counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, argued that the report's conclusion that Department of Homeland Security rhetoric could inspire violence from both antifascists and white racists created a false equivalence that ignored historical and present realities. From the founding of this country to the current moment, Reynolds said, Black people and other people of color have consistently been the victims of white racist violence. He argued that it was a serious mistake for the bulletin to imply that both sides were equally prone to violence. In reality, he said, white supremacy had produced widespread violence and oppression throughout the nation's history, not those who stand against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report also points to ICE advertisements and to the way they were later repurposed by groups such as former Proud Boys members and other extremist networks. It further references posts and discussions from far right and neo Nazi online communities in which users openly discussed infiltrating ICE or using the agency to advance their own political goals. According to the report, these discussions included statements describing participation inside government structures as an opportunity to gain influence or further intensify conflict.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

That leaves the question of the institution issuing the warning itself. Fusion Centers such as the one in Colorado were created after September 11 as tools to combat terrorism. Over the years, that tool evolved into a broad surveillance apparatus tracking everything from drug activity and shoplifting to student protests, despite limited evidence that such centers have been effective in fighting terrorism. Reports generated by these centers are distributed among law enforcement agencies across the country. Micki Trost, a spokesperson for the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, which oversees the Fusion Center, declined to answer whether the Department of Homeland Security had responded to the bulletin. Trost said the center distributes information to private, local, tribal, and state partners. Such bulletins, she said, help share information throughout that network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that is precisely what makes this situation remarkable. The warning is not coming from a civil rights organization, nor from an opposition party. It is coming from a counterterrorism police institution warning another federal agency within the same government that its messaging could be dangerous. Trickler McNulty captured it in simple terms when she described the evidence as \"pretty devastating.\" When the watchdogs themselves begin issuing warnings, the question is no longer whether something has gone off the rails. The only remaining question is how far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So much for the findings from Colorado. There remains a question that extends far beyond the American case, and at this point it becomes a question we ask ourselves. Developments like these are not some distant American peculiarity. Germany, too, is seeing the rise of the AfD, and it is worth asking whether nearly thirty percent of voters truly want what this party stands for. Or whether many have lost their way and are willingly following the wolf to the slaughter without realizing where the path leads. September in eastern Germany will provide the answer. It will show whether the country has learned anything from its own history or whether it is prepared to take a step backward whose consequences could cause immense damage. Anyone who believes the AfD is a party capable of governing mistakes racism for politics and false campaign promises for economic competence. And in the end, they confuse Germany as a homeland with an ideological ruin in which very little remains of what once defined that homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
