Washington, D.C. - Tulsi Gabbard submitted her resignation as Director of National Intelligence on Friday. Her final day in office will be June 30. In her letter to Donald Trump, she wrote that her husband Abraham Williams was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. She said she must leave public service in order to stand beside him and support him through this fight. It is a personal reason, and it deserves respect. What it does not change is the picture of a tenure that unfolded differently than expected - from every direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabbard was confirmed by the Senate in February 2025 to oversee America's 18 intelligence agencies. She arrived with a reputation that made her an unusual figure in Washington: a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii, an Iraq War veteran, a longtime critic of American foreign interventions who had publicly accused Trump during his first term of yielding to neoconservatives. In 2024 she endorsed his candidacy, became a popular figure within his movement, and received arguably the most powerful intelligence position in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What followed was not a rise. It was a slow, almost silent marginalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Trump's national security team made its final preparations late last year for the operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, Gabbard was not there. She was in Hawaii, posting photos of herself at the beach and unaware of the details of the operation. When the Iran war began in February of this year, she was not part of the critical discussions. She publicly diverged from the administration's position, stating that the United States and Israel had different goals in the war and saying that Tehran had made no efforts to rebuild its nuclear program following American strikes on three nuclear facilities last year. That was not the White House position. Instead, for major intelligence consultations Trump turned to CIA Director John Ratcliffe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, Gabbard was assigned a different role. At Trump's direction, she spent recent months pursuing theories of election fraud surrounding the 2020 presidential election - an election in which audits and recounts across numerous states found no evidence of widespread manipulation or fraud. She personally appeared at an election center in Fulton County, Georgia, where FBI agents had seized voting machines. It was an image that said much about her role - not the head of 18 intelligence agencies, but an instrument for political assignments that had little to do with intelligence work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her tenure, Gabbard reshaped the Office of the Director of National Intelligence through staffing cuts and restructuring, placed greater focus on border security and counterterrorism, and launched a broad overhaul of the agency under the name \"ODNI 2.0.\" She sought to stop leaks and investigate what she described as the political weaponization of intelligence agencies. Critics argued that her changes weakened those agencies. Her close ally Joe Kent, who served as America's top counterterrorism official, resigned in March over concerns regarding the Iran war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabbard's departure is already the fourth high-level cabinet exit this year. Before her, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, and several senior health and security officials left their positions, including Marty Makary, who had led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Gabbard wrote that she intends to ensure there is no interruption in leadership or momentum through her final day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her departure comes at a moment when Trump is considering new strikes on Iran if ongoing negotiations fail to produce an agreement on Tehran's nuclear program or at least extend the ceasefire. Gabbard was not involved in those discussions. She was not involved in the discussions before them either. She managed an agency while decisions were being made elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is one sentence in her resignation letter that says more than it intends to say. She writes that she is stepping down to support her husband. That is true, and it is human, and it deserves no skepticism. But it is also the only sentence in the letter that gives a reason larger than the office itself. For everything else - the transition, the stability, moving forward - a few polite lines seem sufficient. As if there was not much to hand over. As if the office had long since been somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
