Food prices around the world are now rising sharply as well. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reports the highest levels in three years. Particularly affected are vegetable oils, wheat and numerous staple goods that determine the daily cost of food for millions of people. The connection leads directly back to the oil market. Because crude oil has become more expensive, global demand for biofuels is rising. Massive quantities of vegetable oils that were originally intended for food production are now being redirected into fuel. At the same time, fears are growing over weaker harvests in Southeast Asia. Lower production there could further intensify the situation.

Wheat prices are also continuing to rise. The United Nations points to drought problems in the United States and Australia, along with dramatically increased fertilizer prices caused by the war. Many farmers are now reportedly considering planting less wheat and switching instead to crops that require less fertilizer. That alone could place additional pressure on the global wheat market. The situation is becoming an increasingly clear example of how quickly military conflicts reshape global supply chains. While missiles, drones and warships dominate the headlines in the Persian Gulf, prices for bread, cooking oil and staple foods are simultaneously climbing thousands of miles away. For many families, the war is therefore becoming visible not first at the front line, but at the supermarket checkout counter.

Oil Slick Off Iran’s Most Important Export Port Continues to Spread

A massive oil slick is now drifting through the Persian Gulf near Iran’s Kharg Island. Satellite images show a contaminated area covering roughly 71 square kilometers. The spill was first detected earlier this week and continues spreading. Kharg is considered Iran’s most important hub for crude oil exports and sits directly inside the region where American and Iranian military forces have been confronting each other for days. The source of the oil remains unclear. That uncertainty makes the situation even more explosive. While missiles, drones and warships dominate the region, nobody appears to be dealing with the environmental disaster unfolding on the water. Experts now assume that major cleanup operations are unlikely to begin as long as the fighting surrounding Iran continues escalating.

The situation is particularly dangerous for the Gulf’s fragile ecosystems. Even though experts currently do not expect large quantities of oil to directly reach the shoreline, many marine areas could still suffer severe damage. The Persian Gulf is already among the most heavily polluted bodies of water in the world. War, the oil industry and military tensions have collided there for years within an extremely confined region. While the world focuses mainly on explosions, airstrikes and the Strait of Hormuz, an environmental crisis is simultaneously growing almost unnoticed across the sea itself.

In the Middle of War, Tehran Suddenly Displays American Antiwar Art

While anti-American posters hang throughout Tehran and the conflict with the United States continues escalating, the Museum of Contemporary Art is hosting an exhibition featuring works by American artists from the 1960s. Nearby hangs Lichtenstein’s famous comic-style image of a fighter pilot that makes war appear both colorful and horrifying at the same time. The works come from the enormous art collection assembled during the 1970s under the Shah’s wife. After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, many Western artworks disappeared from public view for decades. Now they are suddenly reappearing during an open conflict with Washington.

Many young visitors stood in front of the paintings for long periods of time. Some explained that American artists often mocked war in ways rarely seen elsewhere. After weeks filled with airstrikes and bombings, the paintings suddenly no longer feel like distant art history to many visitors, but rather like commentary on the present.

Europe Is Losing Trust - And the Anger Is Now Hitting Almost Every Government

In Britain, France and Germany, public sentiment is turning against political leaders increasingly fast. Many people feel their governments are constantly managing new crises while delivering fewer and fewer actual solutions. High living costs, weak economic growth, migration, rising energy prices and new war expenses are colliding with empty state budgets and increasingly exhausted societies. The situation is especially severe in Britain. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party suffered heavy losses in local elections. His approval ratings have now fallen to historic lows. Many Britons accuse the government of failing to control either the economy or migration. At the same time, taxes and everyday costs continue rising.

France is also deeply trapped in crisis. President Emmanuel Macron has now become one of the most unpopular heads of state in modern French history. National debt continues rising, new military spending is placing additional strain on the budget and many French citizens increasingly view the state as expensive, weak and internally divided at the same time. The political situation is considered more unstable than at any point in decades. Germany looks hardly any better. Friedrich Merz’s government promised an economic restart through massive investments in infrastructure and defense. Yet the economy continues stagnating, energy remains expensive and many voters are losing trust in the established parties. At the same time, the AfD is reaching new record highs in polling because the current government’s weak communication leaves it vulnerable to propaganda.

What stands out is that the anger is no longer directed only at individual politicians. More and more people are apparently beginning to doubt whether Europe’s political systems are still capable of functioning at all. Many governments appear blocked, divided or overwhelmed while the growing perception spreads that ordinary citizens are being forced to absorb the consequences of inflation, war and economic weakness while political elites remain comparatively protected. Many media outlets are contributing to it as well - many drifting further to the right, increasingly reduced to agency copy machines printing whatever is handed to them while leaving the thinking to people who never had much of it to begin with.

As a result, a mood is spreading across Europe that now extends far beyond traditional party lines. The loss of trust is hitting left-wing, conservative, liberal and right-wing governments alike. And that is exactly what now makes the situation so dangerous for Europe’s political center.

Four Children With Elon Musk - And Suddenly Shivon Zilis Finds Herself in the Middle of the OpenAI War

For years, Shivon Zilis worked almost invisibly behind the scenes of the American AI world. She was one of the few individuals with close access simultaneously to Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and the early structures of OpenAI. While billion-dollar valuations, power struggles and AI hype dominated public headlines, Zilis increasingly became an internal bridge between the feuding camps. Now she suddenly finds herself at the center of one of the most important legal battles in the technology industry. In court in California, Zilis described in detail how she was forced to mediate between OpenAI and Musk while Musk was secretly working on a competing AI project and simultaneously beginning to recruit OpenAI employees away from the company.

Particularly explosive were released messages from 2023. After Sam Altman learned that Musk was actively trying to poach talent from OpenAI, Zilis wrote to a friend saying she needed to resign from the board. If the father of her children was suddenly working against OpenAI, there was practically no other option left. The statements reveal how tightly personal relationships, billion-dollar interests and power struggles inside the AI industry have now fused together. Zilis not only held central roles at OpenAI, Tesla, Neuralink and later Musk’s AI company xAI. She also had four children with Musk.

In court, she explained that Musk had originally offered to become a sperm donor for artificial insemination. At the time, the two were not yet in a committed relationship. The first twins were born in 2021 under extreme secrecy. Even her own father initially knew nothing about it. At the same time, Zilis was apparently becoming more and more of an intermediary between Musk and OpenAI internally. In messages, she directly asked Musk whether she should continue working closely with OpenAI in order to keep information flowing. Musk responded that she should remain “close and friendly” while he was already planning to move employees from OpenAI to Tesla and later xAI.

Today, the entire case looks like a glimpse behind the curtain of the small group of individuals controlling the global AI boom. While the public constantly hears talk about the future of humanity, the court documents primarily reveal power struggles, personal dependencies, loyalty conflicts and billion-dollar rivalries between former partners. Shivon Zilis now sits directly at the center of that conflict.

Trump Calls Reporter a “Horrorshow” - Press Freedom as an Irritating Fly for the President

It was the kind of question any journalism intern would ask in their first year. Why are you focusing on all these projects right now while gasoline prices are soaring? A factual question directed at a president whose job is supposedly to answer factual questions. But Donald Trump, 79, had a different response ready for the ABC News reporter. “That’s such a stupid question that you asked. You may understand more about filth than I do, but I don’t allow that. She’s one of the worst reporters. She’s from ABC Fake News and she’s a horrorshow. A question like that is a disgrace to our country.” That is how a man speaks who once swore to defend the Constitution, in which freedom of the press appears in the very first amendment.

The reporter has a name, she has a job and she did exactly what she is paid to do - she asked a question. The problem is not the question. The problem is the man who cannot tolerate it. Anyone who insults journalists as a horrorshow because they are doing their jobs no longer views freedom of the press as a right, but as a permission he intends to revoke whenever he chooses. The real disgrace to the country is not sitting inside the press corps. It stands behind the podium or in front of the cameras calling every uncomfortable question a scandal.

    Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts. wehtut.

We do not sit in comfort writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
