He calls on the United States and Iran to return to talks, not someday, but now. For him, the decisive question is not whether a regime should be changed, but how values can be upheld without innocent people dying. War, for him, is not a tool, but a failure. He speaks of a culture of peace that must replace violence and makes clear that, as a pastor, he cannot take any other position. He goes further and condemns the death penalty in principle. For him, every execution is a break with the claim to respect human life. He says that no state has the right to take life when decisions unjustly kill people. In doing so, he also takes a stand against the recent executions in Iran, without limiting himself to individual cases. His line is clear. Life begins at birth and does not end by state decision.

He carries with him the image of a Lebanese boy who was killed. A child who once wanted to greet him and is now dead. It is not a political argument, but a reminder of what is at stake. For Leo, this is the point where every debate ends.

Pope Leo on migration - states have rights, but people have dignity

Pope Leo XIV rejects simple answers. He clearly states that states have the right to control their borders. At the same time, he asks why wealthy countries do not do more to ensure that people are not forced to leave their homes in the first place. For him, the problem lies not only at the borders, but in the conditions that drive people to flee. He becomes explicit when it comes to the treatment of migrants. People must not be treated worse than pets or animals. This statement is not made in passing, but as a clear criticism of the practices of many states. For him, it is not about ideology, but about dignity. Every person retains it, regardless of their status. Leo brings both sides together. Yes, states have rights. But those rights end where people are degraded. For him, this is not a political position, but a fundamental question of how people treat one another.

Pope Leo shifts the debate - morality is more than sexual issues

Pope Leo XIV addresses a topic that has divided the Church for years. He makes it clear that moral questions must not be reduced to sexuality. For him, justice, equality, religious freedom, and the freedom of women and men are at the center. In doing so, he sets a different emphasis, especially for the Church in the West. In a concrete case, he rejects formalized blessings of same sex couples, as they are being discussed in Germany. At the same time, he reminds that such questions must not become the center of church unity. The Church must not tear itself apart over a single issue. His statement is not loud, but it is clear. Anyone who reduces morality to sexuality narrows their perspective. For Leo, it is about the whole. And that whole is larger than any single debate.

Three weeks of delay - Trump extends ceasefire while fighting continues

Donald Trump announces an extension as if something has been resolved. Three more weeks of ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, negotiated at the White House, announced with the usual certainty. The pause is now set to last until May 17, even though it was originally supposed to end on April 26. Yet even in the hours before this announcement, fighting continues. Strikes in southern Lebanon, rockets hitting Israeli positions, casualties on the Lebanese side. The ceasefire exists, but it is being undermined at the same time. Diplomats are at the table, not those who decide. Representatives of Israel and Lebanon are present, but not those who are fighting the war. Hezbollah is entirely absent. The very group that has been attacking Israel from southern Lebanon for weeks and on whose behavior every further development depends. Without them, every agreement remains a shell. The Lebanese government cannot stop them, the military largely stays out. At the same time, reality shows a different picture. Israel and Lebanon have been in a state that never truly ends for decades. Invasions, withdrawals, new fighting. Since 1978, this is already the fifth incursion of Israeli troops into Lebanon. Each of these movements has further destabilized the country. The numbers show how thin the calm is. Before the ceasefire, around 2,300 people were killed in Lebanon, 13 in Israel. Since the pause began, attacks have decreased, but not disappeared. Both sides test the limits, shifting them piece by piece.

The current escalation was triggered by a Hezbollah attack shortly after the start of US Israeli bombings in Iran. Israel responded with airstrikes across Lebanon and expanded its ground offensive in the south. Since then, a dynamic has been unfolding that cannot be stopped by deadlines. Meanwhile, the White House speaks of progress. The Lebanese ambassador even echoes a well known phrase, saying that with support, his country can be made great again. Trump likes that. But outside, on the streets, something else is being decided. An extended deadline does not replace control. And a ceasefire without those who are shooting remains exactly what it is. A pause on borrowed time.

Drifting and uncontrolled - a Russian tanker becomes a threat to the Mediterranean

The tanker continues to drift, and no one can bring it under control. The Arctic Metagaz, nearly 300 meters long, heavily damaged, loaded with fuel and liquefied gas, lies about 120 nautical miles north of Benghazi in open water. A towing attempt fails, the cable snaps, a second attempt does not materialize. The ship remains where it is. Since early March, the situation has not changed. After a drone strike southeast of Malta, the crew abandoned the vessel. What remains is a hull with a visible breach and a cargo that could leak at any time. At least 700 tons of fuel are on board, along with large quantities of gas. A leak would not remain localized.

See also our article: Ticking time bomb: Damaged Russian gas tanker drifts in the Mediterranean, authorities raise alarm, but no one cares

Authorities openly speak of a danger to the environment and shipping. Other vessels are advised to keep their distance, at least five nautical miles. Any contact could trigger further damage. The Arctic Metagaz is no longer maneuverable, responding only to wind and currents. The vessel belongs to a fleet that operates under changing names and circumvents sanctions. It was renamed just last year. Previously, it had already been subject to restrictions by several Western states. Now it drifts uncontrolled through an already strained region.

The attack itself is part of a broader conflict. Russia blames Ukraine. There is no confirmation, but attacks on Russian tankers have increased. It is the first time a vessel carrying liquefied gas has been hit. The damage is accordingly greater, the consequences harder to assess. The failed salvage attempt is not an isolated case. It is the second attempt this month to secure the vessel. At the same time, the situation at sea is worsening overall. Following strikes on Iran and counterattacks in the Persian Gulf, the conflict has expanded. Trade routes are under pressure, ships are being seized, military actions are directly affecting civilian traffic.

New attacks are also looming in the Red Sea from the Houthi militia, which has previously targeted ships. At that time, routes had to be rerouted, costs rose, crews were put at risk. A burning tanker drifted at sea for weeks. That same scenario is now back on the table. The United States has also imposed a global blockade on vessels linked to Iran and has begun seizing individual ships. This raises questions that go far beyond this case. When free passage at sea is restricted, the entire system of global trade shifts.

The Arctic Metagaz is therefore more than a damaged vessel. It is a sign of how quickly conflicts spread at sea and how little control remains in such situations. As long as it drifts, the risk remains. And it does not end at any coastline.

Trump compares himself to Martin Luther King

“That’s where Martin Luther King gave his great speech. Not a neutral place, not a random setting, but a location charged with meaning for millions, far beyond marble and granite. And Trump speaks. A million people were there back then, he says. For him, it was the same. Maybe even more.

A sentence that sounds casual and yet shifts everything. Not because it is right or wrong, but because it shows how someone reads history who looks for only one thing in it - himself. Martin Luther King’s speech on August 28, 1963 did not endure because so many people stood on the Mall. It endured because it said something greater than the moment, greater than the speaker, greater than the number. A struggle for civil rights, for equality, for dignity that was denied daily and for which people risked their lives. Trump takes this place and asks who had more spectators.

This is not arrogance in the classic sense. It is something colder. It is the complete inability to understand history as anything other than a backdrop. As if meaning were a matter of attendance, as if greatness were something that could be counted. Pessoa once wrote that a person diminishes himself most where he believes he elevates himself. Trump stands at one of the greatest sites in American history and talks about crowd size. The place remains what it was. The sentence only reveals who is speaking.

52 days in detention for a video - Kuwait acquits after the damage is already done

Ahmed Shihab Eldin is released, but only after 52 days in detention. The Kuwaiti American journalist was arrested in early March while in the country. The trigger was not a report, not a traditional publication, but posts on social media. Comments about the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran, along with a video showing a crashed fighter jet near a military base. That was enough. The charges followed a familiar pattern. Spreading false information, endangering national security, misuse of a mobile phone. Terms broad enough to cover almost anything, yet precise enough to justify detention. Officially, his arrest was not even confirmed.

The aircraft in the video was one of three planes that, according to US statements, had been mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defense. These are exactly the kinds of images authorities seek to suppress. Since the beginning of the war in late February, states in the Persian Gulf have tried to prevent footage of impacts, damage, and military incidents from circulating. It is not only about security, but also about maintaining an image of stability. Shihab Eldin is not an unknown figure. He has worked for international media, produced documentaries on sensitive topics, and focused on human rights in the Middle East. That is precisely what makes his case visible. Many others are not.

Human rights organizations speak of vague and broadly defined accusations that are deliberately used to silence independent voices. In Kuwait, the country ranks low internationally in press freedom. In recent months, laws have increasingly been used to limit criticism. The case is not isolated. In the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, hundreds of people have been detained for sharing images of attacks or speaking about them. In Bahrain, individuals have been charged for publicly commenting on strikes from Iran. In Kuwait itself, three men were recently arrested for mocking the current situation in a video.

The acquittal changes little. It ends the case for Shihab Eldin, but not the structure behind it. Those who show what is happening risk detention. Those who speak about it can be arrested. And those who are released after nearly two months have still lost what cannot be restored. Time, security, and the knowledge of how quickly a single post is enough.

When energy prices explode, Europe’s daily life shrinks - the Iran war hits consumers directly

The numbers are clear, but their impact unfolds quietly. Consumer confidence in the eurozone falls in April to minus 20.6, the lowest level since December 2022. In March, it was still at minus 16.4. The drop comes faster than expected and hits at a moment when the situation was supposed to stabilize. The trigger is not in Europe. Since the start of the war in Iran, oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz have been disrupted. Energy prices are rising significantly, households are under pressure, and inflation is picking up again. In March, it climbs to 2.6 percent after previously falling to 1.9 percent. A development many thought had been overcome is returning.

The consequences are immediately visible. In Barcelona, customer behavior is changing. Where people once casually ordered a second drink or dessert, they now stick to the set menu. Regular customers who came daily are cutting back significantly. These are small decisions that accumulate and change everyday life. This trend is not limited to restaurants. It runs through the entire economy. The CEO of a major fashion company warns that a prolonged conflict in the Middle East will further weaken purchasing power. Airlines are already responding in concrete terms. A major German carrier is cutting around 20,000 flights from its summer schedule to save fuel. At the same time, the International Energy Agency points out that Europe has only limited reserves of aviation fuel left.

Another factor comes into play. Energy providers could use the uncertainty to raise prices earlier and more sharply than necessary. Consumer advocates are therefore calling for tighter oversight and clear intervention if companies exploit the situation. For the European Central Bank, the situation is becoming more complicated. It relies on rising consumption to drive growth. But that consumption is slowing. At the same time, the financial reserves of many households have already declined, further limiting flexibility.

The central bank lowers its growth forecast for 2026 to 0.9 percent. In a negative scenario, it could fall to 0.6 or even 0.4 percent. This brings closer a situation in which economic recovery is further delayed. Consumer expectations are also shifting. In Germany, inflation expectations are rising significantly. In France, about half of respondents express strong concern about rising energy prices and their consequences. Such expectations can trigger a chain reaction in which rising wages and prices reinforce each other.

The European Commission is searching for countermeasures. It proposes stabilizing energy networks and improving cooperation on fuel storage. Since the start of the war, the cost of energy imports in the EU has increased by around 24 billion euros. Some countries are already planning relief measures to ease the burden on households. In the long term, experts see only one solution. Less dependence on fossil fuels, more electrification, more renewable energy sources. But that transition takes time.

For now, one thing is clear. Consumers react faster than political measures take effect. They save, postpone spending, and adjust their behavior. The war is therefore not only affecting markets and states, but directly shaping everyday life in Europe.

G20 at a golf resort - Trump opens the door to Putin and calls it helpful

The plan is on the table and it immediately triggers resistance. The United States intends to invite Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit in December. The location is not a neutral conference center, but Trump’s own golf resort in Miami. Politics, business, and personal stage visibly merge here. Trump makes no attempt to frame or soften this. If Putin comes, it would probably be very helpful, he says in the Oval Office. No reference to the war against Ukraine, no distance from a man who has been internationally isolated. Instead, an invitation and an open door.

The decision appears to break with the previous line of Western states. After the war began, Putin was pushed out of many formats. Now he is to return, invited by a president hosting the summit on his own property. The location reinforces the impression. A meeting of the world’s major economies is not taking place in a state setting, but in a private complex directly tied to the host. This raises questions that do not simply disappear.

Trump sticks to his position. He sees benefits where others see risks.

This creates an image that is difficult to separate. Foreign policy becomes a personal decision, international meetings become a personal platform. And at the center of it stands the invitation to a man responsible for war and violence.

    Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts. wehtut.

We do not sit in comfort writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
