In Florida, a criminal investigation is being conducted for the first time against an AI system. An inquiry has turned into a criminal case. At the center is OpenAI - and a chatbot that is no longer seen merely as a tool, but as part of an act that cost two people their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attorney General James Uthmeier stood before the press in Tampa and said a sentence that stays with you: If a human had been sitting on the other side of the screen, we would have filed murder charges. Investigators had previously analyzed the communication between 20 year old Phoenix Ikner and ChatGPT. More than 200 messages, written in the days leading up to the shooting at Florida State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What they found is enough to take the case to a new level. The chatbot provided answers to questions directly related to preparing an attack. It involved the effects of weapons at close range, suitable ammunition, procedures. On the day of the crime, Ikner asked how the public would react to an attack on a campus and when the largest number of people would be present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
