Germany is transforming its industry, not gradually, but under pressure. Month after month, around 15,000 jobs in manufacturing are disappearing, especially in the auto industry, which for decades was the backbone of the economy. Profits are collapsing, companies like Volkswagen and Mercedes are losing massive earnings, while tens of thousands of jobs are being cut or planned for reduction. Demand is weakening, competition from China is growing, and the old model no longer holds. Berlin is not responding by trying to preserve the previous state. Instead, factories, skilled workers and capital are being deliberately redirected into defense production. What used to be engines, transmissions and vehicle parts is now being converted into drone technology, systems for military vehicles and components for aviation. Companies like Schaeffler or Deutz are building their own divisions directly focused on military production. The goal is to generate a significant share of revenue from this sector within a few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state is actively driving this development. New rules make access to financing easier, large contracts secure demand, and overall nearly one trillion euros are available for defense. At the same time, existing production sites are being converted to deliver faster. A platform connects traditional industrial companies with the defense sector so existing structures can be used instead of building new ones. The shift is also a response to the geopolitical situation. Europe wants to become more independent, demand for weapons and military technology is rising, and Germany is positioning itself as a central producer. Even major names from the auto industry are exploring new partnerships, for example in components for air defense systems. At the same time, additional shifts are running in factories to produce ammunition and equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some companies, this is already working. Deutz has developed new business areas and is increasing revenue, while others are still in the middle of restructuring. The key factor is speed. While traditional defense firms need years to ramp up production, industrial companies from the automotive sector bring experience in rapid scaling. This is shifting the balance of power within the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany is not just restructuring its industry, but also its economic role. The era in which cars set the tone is coming to an end. In its place comes a sector that is growing because the world has become more unstable. Whether this will hold in the long term remains to be seen, but the course has been set and is already being implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
