Hardly is it clear that Péter Magyar has won the election when heads of government across Europe speak out. Pedro Sánchez calls it a victory for Europe, Donald Tusk writes of a coming back together. What is being celebrated here is more than a change of government. It is the end of 16 years of Viktor Orbán, which repeatedly strained the relationship between Hungary and the European Union.

Orbán regularly blocked Brussels, especially when it came to support for Ukraine after the Russian attack. At the same time, he maintained close contact with Vladimir Putin. Most recently, reports caused outrage that information from EU meetings may have reached Moscow from within his government. The conflict with the EU thus became not only political, but also structural.

Péter Magyar enters with the promise to repair this relationship. In his first statement, he says Hungary wants to be a European country again. At the same time, he remains deliberately cautious on key issues. Topics such as LGBTQ policy or concrete support for Ukraine were not clearly defined during the campaign. He avoids firm positions where others have become entrenched.

“Hungary will once again be a strong ally in the European Union and NATO.”

International support for him is broad. Emmanuel Macron, Mark Rutte, Friedrich Merz and Ursula von der Leyen speak out even before his appearance on stage. Keir Starmer calls the result a historic moment, Mette Frederiksen, Ulf Kristersson and other heads of government join in. Congratulations also come from Ukraine with a clear signal: Hungary belongs to Europe.

Not everyone reacts the same way. Giorgia Meloni also thanks Orbán for the cooperation of recent years. Jordan Bardella highlights Orbán’s policies and does not mention Magyar. The dividing lines remain visible, even after the election.

Within the EU, the result is understood as a turning point. Ursula von der Leyen writes that Hungary has chosen Europe. Manfred Weber says the country has returned to the center of the EU. For many, this is not only a political change, but a return to a shared direction that had long been blocked.

At the same time, voices from parliament warn against underestimating the significance. Daniel Freund sees Orbán’s defeat as a signal beyond Hungary. A politician who for years stood as an example of a certain political course loses power. Not through external pressure, but through an election.

What follows now is open. Magyar has won, but he has not yet shown how he will govern. His strength lay in momentum, not in fully developed programs. Expectations are high, as is the support. What will be decisive is whether more emerges from this moment than a clear break with the past.

Reddit before a Grand Jury: US government seeks to unmask anonymous critic

A user writes critically about ICE on Reddit, remains anonymous - and that is exactly what becomes the problem. For more than a month, ICE officials have been trying to determine the identity of this account. The first step runs through an administrative subpoena. Reddit is to provide name, address, phone number and further data. As the legal basis, ICE cites a provision of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 - a law dealing with tariffs, trade and goods, not with political speech online. The user, identified in the documents as John Doe, is fighting back with the support of the Civil Liberties Defense Center. His lawyers argue that the posts clearly fall under the protection of free speech. The posts involve criticism, satire and publicly known information about an ICE officer. They see no indication of a crime.

In court in California, the first attempt fails. The government withdraws the request. But only a few days later comes the next step. This time, the order does not come from a single ICE official, but from a federal prosecutor in Washington. Reddit is directly summoned before a Grand Jury. The proceeding is conducted in secret and gives the prosecution significantly more room. Now even more extensive data is demanded, over a longer period than before. For David Greene of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, this is a clear escalation. The protection of free speech is significantly weaker in such a proceeding because the process is not open and not truly adversarial.

Lauren Regan of the Civil Liberties Defense Center also sees a shift in method. After similar attempts were stopped in court, a path is now being chosen that is harder to challenge and creates more pressure. Reddit states that it does not hand over user data voluntarily and reviews every request legally. Users are informed when possible. At the same time, the case shows how far authorities are now willing to go when criticism of migration policy is no longer merely observed, but identified.

Ireland cuts taxes under pressure - protests disrupt fuel supply

Six days are enough to push a country to the edge of a supply breakdown. In Ireland, farmers, truckers as well as taxi and bus drivers are blocking key points of the energy supply. The only refinery, important depots and a major port are temporarily inaccessible. Gas stations run dry, traffic arteries clog with slow convoys. In the end stands a government that intervenes because the pressure has become too great. Prime Minister Micheál Martin announces a package of around 505 million euros. It is intended to cushion rising costs that have exploded since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following the war between the US, Israel and Iran. Earlier, the government had already approved 250 million euros in relief. Now comes the next step, also to calm the situation.

Martin sharply criticizes the protests. The blockades have worsened exactly what people actually wanted to prevent. Less supply, higher prices. At the same time, it shows how quickly a sensitive system can tip when central infrastructure fails. At times, Ireland was on the verge of oil tankers heading to other countries and its own refinery being shut down. Police intervene. Facilities are cleared, roads reopened, in some cases by force. Pepper spray is used, barricades removed, even military vehicles are deployed to reopen access routes. Some groups of protesters withdraw, others allow transport again. Full normalization will nevertheless take time. Industry representatives expect it to take up to ten days until supply stabilizes.

Politically, pressure continues to grow. The opposition openly speaks of a loss of trust. Sinn Féin calls for a vote of no confidence, supported by the Social Democrats. The accusation is that the government underestimated the scale of the crisis and reacted too late. At the same time, a fundamental problem becomes visible that cannot be solved in the short term. Price increases are globally driven, triggered by a conflict over which Ireland has no direct influence.

At the end stands a situation in which multiple levels overlap. International tensions drive prices, national protests worsen the situation on the ground, political decisions attempt to contain both at the same time. Whether the tax relief will be sufficient to calm the situation in the long term remains open. What is clear is how quickly economic pressure can translate into real disruption.

EU continues to rely on diplomacy - and at the same time stands outside

The talks over the weekend fail, but the European Union sticks to its line. Diplomacy is the way, says foreign policy spokesperson Anouar El Anouni. They will support all efforts, together with partners and with consideration of their own interests. The statement is clear, but it comes at a moment when Europe was not involved when the conflict escalated. The attacks by the US and Israel on Iran were prepared without coordination with European states. The consequences are immediately visible. Energy prices rise, economic pressure grows, uncertainty spreads. Europe reacts, but it reacts to decisions made elsewhere.

At the same time, new talks are underway. The United Kingdom and France are advancing plans to establish a coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz after the fighting. It is about trade routes and supply. The step shows how strong the dependence is when key routes are at risk. Pakistan is explicitly praised for its mediation. An indication that movement is possible, even if it has not yet led to a breakthrough. The EU remains on this course and tries to maintain influence through talks while the situation on the ground continues to escalate.

British ex-police officer loses citizenship - security concerns over Russia ties

The British government resorts to a rare measure. Mark Bullen, a former police officer in Hertfordshire, is stripped of his citizenship. The decision is made with reference to national security. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood orders the step, details remain undisclosed. Bullen is 45 years old and served more than ten years in the police. He now lives in Russia and obtained citizenship there in 2022. For authorities, that alone is not decisive. The focus is on his contacts and activities.

In November 2024, he is stopped at Luton Airport by an anti-terror unit. Four hours of questioning, devices are seized. The suspicion is that he participated in activities in the interest of a foreign state. Bullen rejects this and states that he committed no crimes. During his time in the police, he had contact with Russian security forces and participated in an exchange program in St. Petersburg. According to reports, social media content shows clear proximity to the Kremlin as well as criticism of Ukraine. Bullen himself describes his connection to Russia as a long-standing interest in the history of the Soviet Union and calls the Russian passport a personal goal.

His citizenship was revoked in October 2025, but the case only became public in April 2026. In the letter from the Home Office, reference is made to the public interest, concrete evidence is not published. Bullen does not comment on the advice of his lawyers. Such measures are rare. They are usually applied in cases linked to terrorism or activities for foreign states. Cases like Shamima Begum or the exposure of a Russian espionage network show how high the threshold is.

Trump distributes healing - apparently excluding himself

Donald Trump posted on his account an AI-generated image that shows him in white garments with a red cloak, his hand placed on the forehead of a sick man lying in a hospital bed. North Korea supports the creation of a multipolar world and openly aligns itself with China’s claim to territorial integrity. This also touches on Taiwan’s status, which Beijing regards as part of its territory. The meeting in Pyongyang takes place at a time when the international situation continues to harden. Kim speaks of shared interests and of relations between the two countries gaining importance. Wang Yi describes the cooperation as entering a new phase, supported by the rapprochement of recent years.

North Korea is deliberately seeking alignment. After years of isolation, Kim is broadening his foreign policy. Russia remains a central partner, especially through military support in the war against Ukraine. At the same time, China is being reintegrated more strongly, also economically. The ties are becoming more concrete. Flight connections and rail traffic between the two countries have resumed after the pandemic. Political contacts are increasing, meetings are becoming more regular. Wang Yi travels to North Korea for the first time in seven years and holds talks on further cooperation.

In the background stands a larger picture. Kim positions his country as part of an alliance against Washington. Talks with the United States have been frozen for years. He rejects calls for disarmament, and he now openly describes South Korea as an adversary. The meeting in Pyongyang thus sends a clear signal.
