Russ Vought, Donald Trump\u2019s former budget director and current architect of \u201cProject 2025,\u201d lives here \u2013 inconspicuously, on a quiet street where neighbors pick up their children from the school bus and Labradors run across the lawns. It is not a crude scrawl but a silent indictment \u2013 the handwriting of a neighbor, or perhaps a former government employee who knew exactly what these cuts meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such chalk protests have now become a regular sight in the area, usually appearing after new layoffs or another interview in which Vought defends his \u201creforms.\u201d They disappear with the next rain, but their message remains: that even in the most well-kept streets of Washington, the brutality of his policies is not abstract but literally on his doorstep.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignwide\"><video height=\"480\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 854 \/ 480;\" width=\"854\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaizen-blog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/G6tnz.caa_.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo many people here work for federal agencies,\u201d says Cathy Hunter, 60, an archivist and longtime resident of the neighborhood. \u201cThey do their jobs conscientiously and now just feel trampled on.\u201d That Vought is now known in Washington as Trump\u2019s \u201cgrim reaper\u201d is not without symbolism. In a music video shared by Trump himself on Truth Social, an AI-generated Vought walks through a corridor lined with portraits of Democratic politicians, carrying a scythe. The text accompanying it: he is the man with \u201cthe pen, the funds, and the brain,\u201d orchestrating the layoffs, slimming down the state, \u201ccleansing\u201d the system. In internal memos, he urges agency heads to cut programs that are \u201cnot consistent with the President\u2019s priorities.\u201d And he encourages them to use the opportunity to implement \u201cReductions in Force\u201d \u2013 mass layoffs of civil servants who do not fit the ideological mold. One neighbor, who prefers to remain anonymous, says, \u201cEveryone remembers when he said he wanted to cause \u2018maximum trauma\u2019 to federal employees. Nobody forgets that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The neighbors, many of them federal employees, contractors, or veterans, speak of fear and disbelief. Not just because their jobs are at risk, but because the man embodying that threat lives right next door. \u201cHe takes food off people\u2019s tables, he cuts their health care \u2013 and calls himself a Christian,\u201d says a woman who lives a few houses away. \u201cIt\u2019s despicable.\u201d The scene repeats itself everywhere Vought\u2019s policies meet reality. After the restructuring of the \u201cDepartment of Government Efficiency,\u201d led by Elon Musk, entire agencies were dismantled \u2013 including the US development agency USAID. A neighborhood child recently wrote in chalk on the sidewalk in front of Vought\u2019s house: \u201cI was hungry and the USA fed me. He prefers to appear on television. Infrastructure projects are being frozen, clean energy funding blocked \u2013 mainly in states governed by Democrats. At the same time, new money is flowing into programs that appeal to Trump\u2019s core voters: border security, surveillance, and religious initiatives. A former staffer from Vought\u2019s White House years, who wishes to remain anonymous, describes him as \u201cintelligent but obsessed with control.\u201d He regularly presented Trump with papers aimed at the complete disempowerment of independent agencies \u2013 including the Federal Reserve. They experience how their neighborhood has become a symbol of a moral conflict. \u201cWe live in a community where people look out for one another,\u201d says Cathy Hunter. \u201cBut he \u2013 he lives as if we don\u2019t exist.\u201d An older resident puts it more soberly: \u201cIt\u2019s strange. You see him with his briefcase, nodding politely \u2013 and at the same time you know he\u2019s the man who just fired your son.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, residents report, an unmarked SUV has been driving through the street more frequently. Maybe security, maybe government staff \u2013 no one knows for sure. But one thing is certain: the man who wants to shrink the state has already put his own microcosm on alert.
