The place is burning down.\u201d With these words, President Donald Trump described Portland, Oregon \u2013 and thus justified the decision to send 200 soldiers of the Oregon National Guard under federal command into the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignwide\"><video height=\"360\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 632 \/ 360;\" width=\"632\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaizen-blog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ssstwitter.com_1759270737128.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>hat sounds like a dramatic threat turns out, upon closer inspection, to be a constructed backdrop: in a deliberately edited broadcast, Fox News mixed current footage of a few dozen demonstrators with archival material from 2020, when tens of thousands took to the streets after the murder of George Floyd. Street battles, tear gas, a man being pepper sprayed in the face at close range by federal agents \u2013 scenes long past were sold as \u201cproof\u201d of an ongoing left-wing threat. In Portland itself the decision is causing protests, in Salem the governor is trying legally to stop the deployment through a temporary restraining order. On X, Truth Social, and Telegram, Trump supporters accused him of \u201cbetrayal\u201d and \u201cweakness.\u201d For them, the National Guard has never been a tool of protection but a symbol of power. In progressive and military circles, however, Gronewold was praised \u2014 as an officer who understands his duty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYesterday the Department of Defense asked for our support through U.S. Northern Command. In a letter to the 200 mobilized soldiers and airmen, he explains what the mission means \u2013 and above all what it is not. \u201cYesterday the Department of Defense asked for our support through U.S. Northern Command. But Gronewold does not conceal that he knows his troops\u2019 skepticism: \u201cI know some of you have strong feelings about this mission. That is okay. But we are professionals, we fulfill our duties, regardless of how they are received.\u201d These are words that testify to a sense of responsibility \u2013 and at the same time reveal that the general is quite aware of the political misuse of his troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The leaked document also contains practical admonitions. Gronewold urges his soldiers to stay away from political disputes: \u201cBe smart on social media. Do not post about movements, deployment details or operations. That is exactly the case here \u2013 Gronewold explicitly points out in the document that his troops no longer obey Oregon\u2019s civilian leadership, but an entirely different chain of command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parallels to 2020<br>Even during the George Floyd protests in 2020, there were similar discussions: National Guard soldiers spoke anonymously of \u201cidiotic\u201d missions and the danger of being misused as domestic police. Gronewold\u2019s tone \u2013 sober, admonishing, focused on duty \u2013 ties directly to these debates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current situation<br>According to Guard circles, it is expected that the roughly 200 mobilized soldiers will arrive in Portland on Thursday \u2013 unless the courts stop the deployment at short notice, as Governor Tina Kotek is attempting with a temporary restraining order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gronewold\u2019s letter is more than an internal situation report. It is a window into the soul of a troop that has served the state for over 150 years \u2013 from fires to storms to disasters. \u201cWe do not serve because it is easy or popular. We serve because it is our duty and because we have sworn an oath,\u201d he writes. That this oath is now to be fulfilled in the streets of Portland to \u201cpacify\u201d an artificially heated situation shows the full absurdity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Trump is raving about a \u201cwar zone\u201d and Hegseth invokes the \u201cenemies within,\u201d the general\u2019s tone is diametrically opposed: quiet, sober, admonishing. It marks not only a dangerous precedent for the militarization of internal conflicts, it also shows how far Washington has moved away from the constitutional tradition that strictly separates military and police.
