Kennedy Jr. on a stage, speaks of a \u201csynthetically triggered autism epidemic,\u201d and presents the \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d (MAHA) commission as a bulwark against a supposedly corrupt public health system. A moment in which science, politics, and ideology collide \u2013 and where, in the end, truth falls by the wayside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump claims: Autism \u201chas to be artificially induced.\u201d In the past, it was \u201c1 in 10,000,\u201d now it\u2019s \u201c1 in 31.\u201d That \u201ccan\u2019t be natural,\u201d he says. The sentence comes off casually, almost offhand \u2013 but its impact is profound: It joins a series of populist assaults on medical reality \u2013 fueled by myths, misinformation, and a deep distrust of science and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>A Scientifically Debunked Claim<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The notion that autism is caused by \u201cexternal influences\u201d \u2013 such as vaccines or food additives \u2013 stems from a conspiracy theory that emerged from the fraudulent study by British doctor Andrew Wakefield in 1998 \u2013 a study that has long since been disproven. Thousands of studies worldwide confirm: There is no causal link between vaccines and autism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaizen-blog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/orlando-42.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless, Trump continues to repeat this narrative, flanked by a Health Secretary who has been mobilizing anti-vaccine activists for years. It is a calculated play on fear \u2013 a political attack on public trust in medical institutions, dressed up as care for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symbolic Policy Without Consequence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump presents himself as a revealer of truth. His commission, he says, aims to combat the causes \u2013 including by \u201cphasing out\u201d artificial food dyes. Eight of them are to disappear, including petroleum-based additives like Red 40 or Yellow 5. The FDA had previously warned of possible behavioral impacts in children \u2013 but not of autism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is: These measures are cosmetic. They are designed to signal decisiveness, while elsewhere systematically dismantling the very structures that actually protect children's health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Contradiction of Coal Policy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because while Trump speaks about food dyes, he simultaneously restarts coal plants. He lifts limits on mercury and fine particles, weakens the Environmental Protection Agency, and allows emissions that \u2013 according to the WHO \u2013 contribute to asthma, neurological disorders, premature births, and cancer \u2013 especially in children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contradiction could hardly be greater: Here, concern over dyes. There, the mass return of toxic industry. Here, warnings about \u201cover-medicated children.\u201d<br>There, the rollback of scientific standards. An Ideological Health Narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MAHA Commission names four factors in its report that are said to harm American children: ultra-processed foods, environmental toxins, digital behavior, and \u201covermedicalization.\u201d What is missing: clear policy recommendations, scientific evidence, a serious look at causes such as poverty, structural racism, air pollution, and access to early childhood education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What remains is a narrative: The industry is to blame. The system is rigged. Only Trump knows the truth. Only Trump protects our children. It is a politically charged definition of health \u2013 one driven less by medicine than by power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Autism as a Political Instrument<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s statements on autism rates are part of a broader strategy: They fit into an authoritarian-populist style that simplifies scientific complexity, fuels distrust, and casts himself as the savior \u2013 against a \u201csystem\u201d that allegedly protects nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But those who truly want to protect children need more than slogans.
