Sometimes a single image is enough to expose the moral vacuum of a political movement. Kyle Langford, Republican candidate for Governor of California in the 2026 election, achieved exactly that \u2013 with a selfie in front of the Auschwitz camp gate and the caption: \u201cMy 0% Unemployment Plan.\u201d Behind him: the cynical slogan \u201cArbeit macht frei.\u201d In front: a self-satisfied smile. And below: the flag of the United States. It is a transgression that is hardly comprehensible \u2013 not because of its tastelessness, but because of its deliberate contempt for historical dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n

The response from the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum was not long in coming. In a clear statement, the memorial wrote: \u201cThe instrumentalization of the tragedy of all those imprisoned and murdered in the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz for political messaging is a profound moral failure. Auschwitz is not a prop.\u201d The sentence was directed not only at Langford but also at an America where right-wing forces are increasingly willing to make even the darkest chapters of human history mere props for their ideology. But Langford had no intention of backing down. Instead, he publicly reaffirmed that Auschwitz was indeed his model for achieving zero percent unemployment. In a follow-up comment, he declared: \u201cI wasn\u2019t joking. It is exactly what California needs to become safe again.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
